i use dvdshrink to burn dvds. If the file size is no larger than it should be, the files go unchanged. It's free, and works better than nero for me. I got a few coasters from nero, which is why i stopped using it, no coasters since

I'm on win xp, and using the dvd burner that came with the PC, it's call "Record now! CD & DVD recording"

First things first. You don't download only until the next person completes, you download until you've uploaded at least as much as you downloaded. And always make sure you don't disconnect if you are the only seed. ;)
Now... on to RecordNow! Here's what you do:
select "Data Disc"
name it whatever you want in the "Volume Label" thing at the top
drag in your VIDEO_TS folder into the main window, no need to worry about the order of files
click on the red button on the lower right and wait til it's done
With this proggy you can also put files outside the VIDEO_TS folder such as txt, md5 or artwork. Most players will play the DVD with those files there.
If you care about your md5s for trading and stuff DON'T use Nero. It alters the bup files when it burns a DVD.

Feralicious, not sure what you mean by Nero's conversion of .bup files so they no longer match my md5 (newbie, remember?). I do have RecordNow already loaded on my PC, so maybe I'll try that. Didn't realize you could use it for burning downloaded files to DVD (I've been using it for CD burning with good results).
Thanks again for the help.Sorry. The md5 allows you to check the file hash and make sure you got it intact. If the md5 doesn't pass it means your files aren't in their original state. So a lot of DVDs come with md5s. So then if you download it and check the md5 and it's fine, then burn it with Nero, it alters a couple of the files in the VIDEO_TS folder for some reason, so then when you try to verify the files using the md5 it will fail even though the files will play fine. So it doesn't alter them in a way so as to ruin them, but it makes your md5 incorrect and it will fail verification. So in short, don't use Nero if you are going to trade and use the md5 files.
And yeah, use RecordNow... Here's how you do it (from a post I just made a few mnutes ago for someone else but newly improved!)
select "Data Disc"
name it whatever you want in the "Volume Label" thing at the top
drag in your VIDEO_TS folder into the main window, no need to worry about the order of files
drag in any txt, md5 or artwork files keeping them outside the VIDEO__TS folder
click on the red button on the lower right and wait til it's done
Most players will play DVDs with files outside the VIDEO_TS folder but I would test yours out with one.

Alright, tried it with RecordNow as you suggested and everything seemed to work fine. I burned two DVDs, one with the extra files outside the VIDEO_TS folder and one without. Both play fine on my PC and look great. Neither will play on my standalone, though. It's a Panasonic RV30, admittedly a couple of years old. Guess it's back to the drawing board. :(
Maybe I'll go ahead and download the trial version of Nero and give it a shot. I'm not so concerned about the md5 problem. Does anyone know if I can get away with just downloading the DVD Rom burning module? I really don't need all the other stuff. Thanks again!

Well up until recently I have been strictly a music trader. I archive everything I get in compressed form (shn or flac), then play it though my computer sound card into my stereo system using plug-ins for winamp. For my car I may burn audio, but I never rerip for trading purposes. But recently I have finally downloaded a couple of torrents for video DVDs. As usual, I plan to archive everything I download on data DVD's (for trading purposes), then I'll be making seperate video DVDs to view.
So let me get this straight - if I burn the video data for archival purposes using Nero the md5's won't check anymore? Or does this only apply to making them into playable videos?
Thanks for your tips.

Just a hunch but I would think that it's not the software but the media or the standalone causing it not to play. Have you ever been able to play a DVD+/-R on it? Are you sure it supports it?

Yeah, the DVDs I've burned from digital home movies (same media) work fine on my standalone, so I don't think that's it. When I try to play the ones I burned with RecordNow I get a message on my player that says, "This type of disc cannot be played." :hmm:

i'm sure the program gives you two [or more] options for "disc type", a "data disc" or a "watchable dvd". in nero, you burn a data disc [called DVD-ISO] for archiving/trading purposes, and a "DVD-Video" to watch ona standalone.
i'm not sure what RecordNow calls em, but probly similar...maybe you burned a "data disc" type, and yer standalone can't read it?

You can try Burnatonce (http://www.burnatonce.com/). Free and for me 100% reliable.
Damn, this is maddening. So what the heck, I tried downloading burnatonce. Then I noted I also had to download ProDVD, which I did. Then I dutifully plugged in the required key code. Everything seemed to set up OK. Twice I tried to burn a DVD, with the same result: My burner kicked it out and burnatonce said "there were some errors, consult the key log." Checking the burnatonce forums, it said that the most common errors were an incorrect key code (not likely, as I copied/pasted it) or expired version of ProDVD, also not likely as I just downloaded it. Unless someone's got a clue about this, Nero here I come. So far I've tried ArcSoft, DVD Santa and now burnatonce. Maybe the fourth time's the charm?

What the heck am I doing wrong? My standalone player will play any commercial DVD as well as DVD+Rs friends have burned and DVD+Rs I burned from my digital camcorder movies. But it won't play these discs burned from VIDEO_TS folders. I've got about 10 gig of video on my hard drive right now that I can't view except on my computer. I've got a friend who's totally into Pink Floyd who I would like to send the Live 8 set to, but I don't have any idea if it will play on his standalone. Help!!!

Have you tried to do it however your friends did it? Do you have an external drive you can take to your friend's and burn it there? Or actually you can give them the DVDs you burned and have them rip it and burn it and see if it works.
But don't give up!

Oh yeah, just to clarify my previous post about Nero not creating a disc that I could play on my home unit. Turns out--like the newbie fool I am--I used PAL format files (of the Pink Floyd Live 8 performance) for my test burn, so no surprise that they didn't play on my U.S. format standalone. Last night I downloaded the NTSC version, and then it worked like a charm. Lesson learned, the hard way. Sorry to raise such a ruckus, but all's well that ends well. Thanks again!

I was going to post about this, but used the Search and hit this thread. I had similar problems with three DVDs in Nero Burning ROM. When I went to copy the contents of the Video_TSO folder into the to-be-burned pane, I got a message that the VOB and IFO did not agree. It still allowed me to burn the DVDs, but though the images played they had no sound. A third DVD, at the same step, noted that the video file reallocation had failed - this disc just loaded a frozen image.
In all three cases, I was able to use NeroVision Express and load the VOB files into projects and then create my own menus, and the resulting DVDs play and sound fine. So, I guess that's something of a workaround.
Has any one seen this VOB vs IFO disagreement message?

FrankDamn, I hate to say yes and then not have a solution. But there's a fix for it... let me see if I can remember it. The site it was on doesn't seem to exist anymore. I got the fix from the forum site that went with Savage Jaw and I don't remember what it was called but Savage Jaw is no longer a BT site and doesn't seem to link to the other site... maybe I have my registration email saved... no I don't see it.
It was something like copying the .bup file and changing the extension to .ifo, replacing your original .ifo file. You can always try it. Back up your originals first.

There are a few ways you can go about this, i will give you the way i do it, which entails you burning two copies: one to archive/trade with [data disc] and one to watch on yer standalone DVD player [DVd-Video disc].
DVD-Video [watchable copy]:
1. open Nero Burning ROM. Choose "DVD" as yer disc and "DVD-Video" as yer project format, then Click "New" to open up yer new project.
2. Select *all* of the files from the Sting show's "Video_TS folder" [all .ifo, .bup, and .vob files] and drag them to the "RED Video_TS folder" in the new project's window [left side of Nero window]
3. Click Burn...
Data Disc:
1. open Nero Burning ROM. Choose "DVD" as yer disc and "DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO)" as yer project format, then Click "New" to open up yer new project.
2. Select the Sting show's Root Folder [main folder with all contents in it] and drag it over to the Project window.
3. Click Burn...

Store the Data Disc away for copying for future trades, and use yer DVD-Video for watching. There are other ways which someone might share, but i find this to be the best method for trading.
also, re: "what kind of DVD?" i'm guessing you mean DVD+R or DVD-R? it doesn't matter, other than you need to check: a) does your DVD Burner support both formats, and b) does yer standalone DVD player play both formats. which you should use will be based on those two answers.

one more thing.... if you use nero (other programs may do this too) you can do a test burn. do this and see what speeds it gets. If it is slow, it could be you have outdated eide drivers. update those and you will good to go. That is assuming it's an ide hdd and dvd as opposed to SATA.

Particulary this post, the second one
Check this out bro...
I noticed a similar problem a few days ago and did a google search and was comforted to see I wasn't alone... not only were my burning speeds more than doubled (audio discs that would burn in 4 minutes at 16x were taking 8-9 minutes and videos that would burn in 15 minutes at 4x were taking over half an hour) but my computer was also running very very sluggish whenever I would engage a burn... a problem I never had before.
I came across this suggestion and I am back to burning as good as new.
Go to CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM -> HARDWARE -> click on DEVICE MANAGER...
Find the IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS section and expand the list (it should now show 3 items) double click on the PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL -> click on the ADVANCED SETTING tab... if it says PIO in the CURRENT TRANSFER MODE you found your problem! Now check the same with your SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL.
Now to fix it...
Back at the DEVICE MANAGER -> IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS section... right click on PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL and select UNINSTALL. Confirm to continue, but DO NOT RESTART THE CPU AT THIS TIME.
Repeat the same uninstall process for the SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL... this time restart the computer.
This will force Windows to automatically reinstall the IDE drivers.
Then restart the computer again and you should be good to go.
Like I said, I had a similar 'slow burning' problem to the one you described and this worked like a charm.
Hope it helps!

Okay, so I received this 4.598 DVD in a B&P offer (I'm trying to burn this to burn this one for you toto)
and when I try to burn it for a trade, I can't seem to get it right
I inserted the original DVD into my drive and copied all the files and placed them in a temporary folder (I made afolder and named it "Temporary Phish Files") when I pasted them in it, all the files copied fine except 01_4 VOB
so then I tried jsut copying the 01_4 VOB file into the temporary folder, and the same error came up
the error is:
"Cannot copy VTS_01_4: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
any help?

Don't know what that error means, but, if what you received is a vdeo dvd you should rip it rather than just copy the files. If you are on a pc use DVDDecrypter (you'll have to google it, they're no longer supporting it), if you are on a Mac use MacTheRipper which can be found on version tracker.
That may or may not solve your problem.

About a month ago I bought a DVD burner (Optowrite DD0405), and it never burned a DVD. Power Calibration errors always came up. I tried a few different kinds of media, and none of them worked. I was told that the drive may be defective. It was still under warrenty, so I brought it back and got a new drive of the same model. This one has the same problem. I was wondering if anyone could help me before I decide to trash it and buy a new model. Is it possible that both drives are defective? Maybe something is wrong on my end. I dunno, but any feedback would be apprecitated.

hmmmmm well I have Firmware V. 160E, and when I went to see if there was an upgrade, it said the latest they had was v. 160E. Also I noticed the test computer they used had 512 MB of ram. I only have 256 MB. Maybe I don't have enough ram to burn DVDs. If it is any consilation, My power supply is only 250 watts, and I also updgraded my hard drive from 40 mb to 240 mb, so I was thinking maybe I simply don't have the power to burn DVDs. A few people I know told me that could be the problem, but some also say that the power has nothing to do with it. You see, I have a 4 year old computer than I just started upgrading some parts. maybe ram and power supply are what I need to upgrade next. Could that be a factor?
Thanks
AAR.oner
2005-08-20, 03:54 PM
RAM could definitely be yer problem...256MB is pretty low in re: to todays technologies with burning...powersupply is a bit less likely...

don't think ram is gonna help you. It's probably the DVD player going bad. DVD burning programs go through a series of checks one of which is power calibration prior to start. Yours is failing. It could be your power supply but I highly doubt it. You've got a bad DVD player AGAIN. arrrgh.
Take it out and try it in a buddies computer. If it works it's probably something else. Put your buddies power supply in your computer and see if it makes a difference. Good Luck

wow. I stand corrected. Keep an eye on the burner though. ;)
a sign of it going bad is carazy buffer levels. If when it's burning, you can see it going from 20 to 90 to 10 to 90.... it's a matter of weeks.

so i just started downloading dvd's. i finished 11/27/01 phil and friends. now i don't know how to get it onto dvd. my friend said keep everything that downloaded, other than the text file in there. he said inside the folder i saved it, create 2 more folders, on labeled AUDIO_TS and the other labeled VIDEO_TS. he said put everything that downloaded inside the VIDEO_TS folder and leave nothing in the AUDIO_TS folder. he said then go to the dvd burner put the blank in and just pull over the main folder where everything is stored. i burned that, it completed but it seems to only be a data disc. it still has the 2 folders i created and the vob or vos or whatever the files and the smaller files as well. when i put that disc into my dvd player it said there was no playback. please tell me what i need to do from the time the download is completed until the time i can watch the actual dvd on my t.v. thanks for the help.

Looks like you kinda doubled up.
You want to burn the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders only onto the disc.
It sounds like you had the Audio and Video folders INSIDE another folder and then burned all 3 folders to disc.
It should only be the Audio and Video_TS folders.
AAR.oner

tho some feel it might be overkill, i always burn two disc per show--a "data disc" for archiving and trading with, and a DVD-Video disc for watching on the standalone.
DATA DISC--burn a DVD-ROM [UDF/ISO] disc with *EVERYTHING* that came with the show [video files, info txt, checksum, etc]. this can be archived, and then used to copy from for other people when trading thru snail mail.
DVD-Video disc--if you use Nero, select DVD-Video as yer project type, then drag everything from the show's Video_TS folder [.ifo, .bup, and .vob files] to the *red Video_TS folder* in the project window...then burn
if you use another program, you can simply do as Mamba said--create an *empty* Audio_TS folder, and then a Video_TS folder which contains all the .ifo/.bup/.vob files

here is what happens:
1. I put a dvd into the drive to copy it.
2. I start up dvdx copy
3. I copy the dvd, no problems
4. i put the new copy of the dvd back into the drive to see if it worked and it wont read

so i figured it out. everything worked with that advice. i simply used the 2 folders and using the 2 inside the main one must have caused a problem. now my problem is the same for the phish show i just downloaded. it burned and played fine on my pc but that playback error on my dvd player. not sure why. at first i thought it was cause i had everything in lower case. went back and put the empty AUDIO_TS folder in then added the VIDEO_TS folder that contained everything. same end result. can anyone tell me now what is wrong. doing the same thing as i just did with the phil and friends show. thanks

what make/model DVD player do you have? it could incompatability issues with the standalone.
other wise, check and see if there are only .ifo, .bup, and .vob files in the VIDEO_TS folder...sometimes, if there is an .md5 checksum *inside* the VIDEO_TS folder, it'll cause problems with a standalone.

At what speeds do you burn? Try it slower. Do you have the newest firmware for your drive? Have you tried a different media.
I had a similar problem with cd-rs from Traxdata on my old Cd-burner. They played fine on all other drives, but the device I burnt it with never read the cds. I switched to different media.

I had a very similar problem with my CD burner right before it died altogether and I had to replace it:
I could burn succesful CDs that played on my CD player, but I could not read or open any CDs/CD-ROMs (audio or software) with that drive. My drive would burn files, but would not read them.
It was an excellent Lite-on burner, and I probably burned well over 3,000 discs before it died, so I got my money's worth out of it.

I was wondering what the difference is between "4x" and "4x DVD" when you set write speed? The "Help" for Toast bites and gives no info about this whatsoever. I also came up blank at the Roxio website.
I'm using Toast Titanium on OS10.3.9.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks ffooky, you are very knowledgeable.
One more question: why does it give the 4x option when burning a DVD?
ffooky

Because it's one of the theoretically available speeds for DVD burning. Once you have a blank in the drive, the speeds given in bold are those that are actually available to you.

If you mean you want to convert AVI (DivX, XviD) to (S)VCD/DVD then Toast 7 is what you need, though it is of course not free.
The best free (well, shareware) option is ffmpegx <http://homepage.mac.com/major4/>. If you have the DivX/Xvid components <http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~naegelic/index.php> installed in /Library/QuickTime you can use the DVD ffmpeg Quick Preset, if not you'll need to use the DVD mpeg2enc one. Whichever preset you do use, I'd advise you to skip through and check the converted files all the way to end before burning.
If you do have the components above installed and the file plays in QuickTime, you can *probably* use Toast 6 but the encoder is much improved in 7. Check the file with VLC first to check which audio codec was used as, if it was AC3, you'll need to install the QT AC3 component as well <http://www.insaneness.com/ac3.html>.

did you first try verifying the checksum to make sure everything is there properly?
next, i believe Nero gives you the option to continue burning even tho its reporting the error [this error is a bug in Nero], if so try it. alot of times, it will play just fine on yer standalne DVD player.
also, make sure the firmware for your particular drive is up-to-date [this shouldn't affect the "error message" in Nero, but is important none the less]...usually at the website for the drives manufacturer.
lastly, try searching over at http://forums.afterdawn.com & http://forum.digital-digest.com for more info...goodluck!

create an emty folder called AUDIO_TS and also add the VIDEO_TS folder, then burn. this should work in a standalone DVD player. Use Nero or whatever. Also backup the original data files and info included with the show on another disc.

I've used a ISO program along with DVD decrypter that said the same thing to use a video_ts and an audio_ts folder but when I burned the disc my player says it cannot play this type of DVD.
If I create the video_ts and audio_ts folders where do I put the files that I've downloaded? Should I create a folder that contains both of the files mentioned with the downloaded files in the video_ts folder?
This is my first DVD download and I just need a little direction.
Thanks again.
the files you downloaded should be in a folder. open that folder, inside is a VIDEO_TS folder. the stuff in this VIDEO_TS folder should go in the VIDEO_TS folder that you burn. just add the empty AUDIO_TS folder. when you burn the disc just make it with the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders, no others.
the stuff in the VIDEO_TS folder is a bunch of .vob files and a couple .ifo and .bup files.

to burn a "watchable" copy for yer DVD player:
Open Nero Burning ROM
Select DVD-Video
Drag ALL of the contents of the show's VIDEO_TS folder [.ifo, .bup, and .vob files] to the red VIDEO_TS folder in the project window.
Burn disc.
some DVD player will also play "data discs", which you would select DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO), and then drag the shows VIDEO_TS folder *and* AUDIO_TS folder to the project window.
for archiving and trading, you might wanna burn it as a data disc and include the info texts and checksums

Yes, the Video_TS folder is the one you want to burn.
In Nero, select the watchable/playable DVD option. This should give you an Audio_TS and Video_TS folder in the image window.
Drag all the files from the downloaded Video_TS folder into the "image" Video_TS folder. The Audio_TS folder will stay empty. Burn away...
Using the same software as u
1 Open/select dvd-video
2 Drag video_TS folder into left hand box of nero
3 Follow nero wizard to burn
Only thing I have not sussed is making menus work. Just need more practice :)

This is a long post but I tried to be as specific as possible.
I downloaded the Phish Video Montage DVD. I was able to view it on my pc (Dell, XP prof.OS) using VLC media player. I recently bought a DVD burner - NEC DVD RW ND-3540A and Nero 6 software. I burned (?burnt?) all of the files from the torrent (except the MD5 checks). I used a Verbatim 16 x DVD+R disc (review in cdfreaks.com gave this media a high rating with this burner). When I tried to watch the video on my pc using Nero Showtime, the audio worked but the video didn't - black screen. I was able to watch the video from the DVD when I opened it with VLC. The biggest problem is that when I put the disc in my DVD player (Samsung P-231) all I saw was an FBI warning followed by a title saying "TeamHood production". The disc itself wouldn't play. I kept on getting the stop logo (red circle with a line in the middle). :( I previously emailed Samsung and they said the player could play both DVD+R and DVD-R.
Anyone have any ideas

what kind of disc did you burn: DVD-ROM (ISO) or DVD-VIDEO?
to burn a watchable copy, choose DVD-Video as the disc type, drag *all* of the files in the show's VIDEO_TS folder [.iso, .bup, & .vob files] tot he *red VIDEO_TS folder* in the project window...then burn.

I'm not really sure why it is having trouble with your computer play back. But I wonder about your standalone player. Have you used any DVD+/-R burned by other people in it? The particular model you have seems to have some terrible reviews.
I have a Samsung Upconverting DVD player (their top of the line player) and it is great in many regards, but can be quite picky about the burner used to create the disc (even using the best quality media). In fact you can use crappy media as long as you use an HP 630i burner.
The playback problem on the computer is puzzling, if you haven't played back DVD+/-Rs before, you might want to see if you can get your hands on some that were burned by someone else, to narrow down the problem.

Using dvd-video from initial dvd menu in nero 6 suite, then drag 'n' drop of video_ts folder into lefthand window nero opens. It then reads and we go to menu 'customisation' window which shows menu from disc.
It is a PAL/NTSC mix and nero asks re conversion. I have burnt as both and the only problem is the failure of the menu to be interactive ! Works fine on HD playback

We don't allow encrypting of any sort here. Are you sure you burned it correctly? Did you burn it as Data > DVD-ROM (UDF) or Video > DVD-Video? And which options did you check off? Did you add an AUDIO_TS folder or an EXTRAS_TS folder?
And, finally, did you run the md5 checksum against the files to make sure they all downloaded correctly?

Just a thought...Were you still seeding the DVD at the time ? It might have been one of the ones for which Toast wants to alter the IFO/BUP files.
Alternatively, have you checked that the VIDEO_TS folder/files within is/are not Read only ? Seems a lot of the time, Windows makes files/folders this way and Toast would encounter the same problem if it wanted to alter the BUP/IFO files

i'ma bit unclear as to which Nero "program" yer using...sounds like Nero Vision maybe?? also, are you starting off with Nero's Start Smart interface, if so DON"T...
just open ***Nero Burning ROM*** from yer start > programs list...there should be no "menu customization" window or anything popping...select DVD-Video when Burning ROM first starts up, and then drag *all of the files inside* the show's VIDEO_TS folder over to the *Red* VIDEO_TS folder in the projects window...
as for PAL/NTSC mix, i've never come across a show like that, so i'm at a loss as to how Nero handles this.
sorry if i'm misunderstanding...hope this helps...let us know

It does. I am using nero6 reloaded. I will open burning rom rather than smart start and open folder and drag files rather than drag folder............thanks
That works, thankyou. What is the issue with smart start ??
AAR.oner
2005-10-10, 03:51 PM
smart start's not user-specific enough...i ALWAYS use Burning ROM, be it CD or DVD...
for DVD's, use the "DVD-Video" format for a watchable disc, and "DVD-ROM (ISO/UDF)" for archiving/trading [also referred to as a "data disc" -- this allows you to keep all the files: checksums, info texts, etc]
for CD its the same--Audio CD for a listenable copy and "CD-ROM (UDF/ISO)" for a data disc

If your standalone DVD player can play a DVD burned as data you can save yourself from burning the video DVD. Just keep the extra stuff outside the VIDEO_TS folder. Since mine does I never burn video DVDs.
I have to throw that in Aaron. :p
AAR.oner
2005-10-10, 06:45 PM
true fera...i always forget that since mine won't...i think it'll play em if the extra files are in a EXTRAS_TS folder...i need recheck...i still usually burn a "watching copy" and an "archival/trading copy" cuz otherwise all my shows would be scratched...
so, yeah alg--you can try burning a show with Burning ROM as a "DVD-ROM (ISO)" with the info/checksums *outside* of the VIDEO_TS folder and see if yer player will play it...

If you're using Toast 7, you need to have the "DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS" checked and NOT "DVD-Video". Drag the entire VIDEO_TS folder into the window. Alternatively you can go to Data > DVD-ROM(UDF). For that option you need to add an AUDIO_TS folder. If you use the Video menu you don't have to worry about it.

Select the drive in the upper right - If you're burning DVD's, make sure that [DVD] is in the brackets.
You're looking for "DVD-Video Files" under the What would you like to burn heading. Drag/select the Video_TS folder of the show you want into the window.
Burn.
whenever i try to drag the folder, it starts to add the files, then during the process of adding the files a box will appear and tell me that "the disc is full. error importing video segment. file cannot be inserted." what do i do next?

I'm at work so I don't have the program in front of me - BUT - the only thing I can think of is that you're trying to drag more then the DVD disc can hold. Even if that's the case, I don't recognize the error - I've been able to drag more then 4.7 Gigs into the window and not get the error. I get the error when I try to burn the disc - it stops me right away and says the DVD is too small.
How much are you trying to burn onto one disc? Are you doing dual layer?
For what it's worth....Nero Express is not very good. I myself got it when I bought my burner but after a couple of weeks of frustration, went out and bought the full version of Nero. It's expensive, but well worth it.
Another thing that just occurred to me...is your hard drive full (or nearly) perhaps? Burning programs need a sort of swap file to be able to burn from...maybe your hard drive is too full. If you're hard drive is full, clear up some room, defrag and try again.
:hmm:
Maybe Aaron will have some insight. I just need some more coffee... :lol

hey J...
need some clarification--is the show yer tryin to burn a "dual-layer" show [i.e. DVD9], or just a regular DVD show [DVD5]?
you don't need to "set" anythig regarding single-layer and dual-layer...the only time you'd adjust for this is in yer burning prog [nero] where you'd select DVD9 as the disc size, instead of DVD5...
i've never used their free bundled Express, but i can tell you that i've never liked any of the Nero functions other than the Burning ROM...just a FWIW, but other than that, i'm guessing it could be that the HD is full...can't remember how much Nero uses for caching a DVD, but its sizable...i'd try clearing some space as Mamba said...let us know if that does the trick...
I just got a pioneer dual layer bundled with nero express... I haven't tried it yet, but I can see the "size limit" indicator at the bottom has increased

I think mine fluctuates with what disc is in there...
No disc in the drive it shows both the single and dual layer limits.
Then when I put a normal DVD in...it spins it, sees what it is, and adjusts that indicator.
Never used a Dual Layer disc, but I'd imagine it's similar.
I'm still thinking J's error is the hard drive being full or nearly full.
ok update time....
i cleaned some hard drive and loaded the video file. after the video loaded, it said that i need a multi channel plugin. i got pass this message then it takes me to the menu screen. the video has its own menu, but the software wants me to make my own menu. how do i get pass this part? i want to make the dvd with the menu that it came with.

I have nero 6 reloaded with mega plugins. If you check out the threads with me/and nero 6 you will see the answer is SELECT NERO BURNING ROM and ignore smart start and/or express.
Once I sussed this I have had no problems with DVD burning.
One thing to note is that burning rom will show 2 folders audio_ts video_ts. You only need to 'copy to compilation' the video_ts files from your downloaded show which will automatically go to the burning rom video_ts folder. Do not worry re audio_ts folder

i have a video that i downloaded from a different source (that is, not TTD), that i'm having difficulty with. i wonder if anyone can help me out.
It is a Joni Mitchell mpeg and here is what gspot reports:

i'm not sure what to do with it. It is mpeg-1, so i tried to burn it (using Nero 5.5.10.56) as a VCD. Nero sez it is non-compliant. Tried as a SVCD, same result.
What does gspot mean where it reports that the mpeg is already in dvd format?
As far as i could find out from research on the web, mpeg-1 doesn't support 720 x 480 frames, but that's what gspot is reporting.
Any ideas on how i go about burning this to a viewable dvd or cd?
Thanks!

and as i read in another thread...
"DVD-Video disc--if you use Nero, select DVD-Video as yer project type, then drag everything from the show's Video_TS folder [.ifo, .bup, and .vob files] to the *red Video_TS folder* in the project window...then burn
if you use another program, you can simply do as Mamba said--create an *empty* Audio_TS folder, and then a Video_TS folder which contains all the .ifo/.bup/.vob files"
when i do these things and hit the burn button...this message comes up..
"dvd video files reallocation failed. the resulting dvd-video might be unplayable. do you wish to continue?"

hmmmm...i had this error pop up once a long time ago, but when i went ahead it played fine...
just for clarification, a DVD-Video is a "watchable" copy, whereas a DVD-ROM (ISO &/or UDF] is a data disc...
all DVD players should play DVD-Video discs fine, and alot will play DVD-Rom discs IF the non-dvd files [info text, checksums, etc] are OUTSIDE the VIDEO_TS folder, and you've created an empty AUDIO_TS folder...
did you put *only* the dvd-files in the VIDEO_TS folder when selecting DVD-Video? [i.e. only the .ifo, .bup, and .vob files]...you cannot include any of the non-dvd files on a DVD-Video disc [i'm pretty certain]

I believe you would need to demux the mpeg-1 to it's elementary streams, and then drop them into your favorite authoring program to compile into a useable disc....
I'm not a video guru (audio guy here)....but I recently had this issue arise when trying to convert a PAL to NTSC.....I had selected mpeg-1 as the output format, and when I dropped it into my software, it said it can burn the dvd, but it is a lower quality format......
But....mpeg-1 is the format for VCD and SVCD I believe......so I'd just try doing that and forget about the nero warnings.....they are usually bad info anyways....

i'ma attach the "burning a DVD-Video" section of the guide we're working on...stepbystep with screenshots
note: you'll probably wanna save the checksum, info, etc, that came with the show for archiving/trading...you *can't* add these to a DVD-Video [you'll need to burn as a data disc -- DVD-ROM (ISO &/or UDF)] ...as has been mentioned before, *some* DVD players wll read dvd data discs, but you have to set it up just right...i can walk you thru that later if you want
so see if this works...if, not i wonder if the show's files are damaged in some way maybe, or yer dvd player is old?

aight, file limit issues again...can't zip it small enough either...so here's a condensed version:
1. Open Nero Burning ROM from the program list [NOT start smart or any of the other vision xpress, etc]
2. Select "DVD" and then "DVD-Video" in the pop up...click on the "ISO" tab and check the settings...if yer using "relaxed restrictions", maybe yer player can't deal with these??? once done, then click "new".
3. Their should be a *red* VIDEO_TS folder and an AUDIO_TS folder in the project window.
4. Navigate to the show's folder and select *ALL* of the files in the show's VIDEO_TS folder [.iso, .bup, and .vob files]
5. Drag them to the red VIDEO_TS folder
6. Burn
there *should be* no compatability issues with yer standalone dvd player using this method...let us know...we'll get it figured out eventually...
also, what make/model is yer standalone dvd player? just curious

will nero not reencode the file if you try to burn it as a vcd, svcd? It may give you the messages but you can continue, in which case it will reencode it to be compliant. If this doesn't work you're gonna have to drop it into vegas or something like that and reencode it into dvd or vcd or whatever you want. demuxing will not be required. demultiplexing is only required if you are trying to avoid reencoding... which you will have to do.

I'm at a complete loss.
Couple of suggestions:
1. Go to Nero's support website...somewhere on there you should be able to submit the scenario to them - the steps you've taken, the errors you're getting, etc.
http://ww2.nero.com/enu/Support.html
2. Uninstall and then reinstall Express. Don't know if we've covered that yet or not.
3. Do the uninstall reinstall thing and update drivers for your DVD burner - drivers will be located at the manufacturer's website.
4. Get rid of Express and but a retail version of Nero 6. I hate to recommend this and then you have the same problems. I would try to work out the bugs on the free version.
the type of files that are in my folder are

update...
i did exactly all of those steps. the same messages came up again "dvd-video reallocation failed. the resulting dvd-video might be unplayable. do you wish to continue."
it push the ok button and then a new message comes up with a timer "a non critical error occured during the write which may result in a defective write. do you wish to continue the write anyway?"
this is sorta normal... ignore the error continue anyway. and it will play fine.

ahh its a .mpeg file...nero does have an encode process [Nero Vision Xpress i think]...but if you wanna try burning to VCD or SCVD, just select that option when beginning Burnin ROM...should be listed in the project type pop-up

to reencode to DVD...use Vision Express > Make DVD > DVD-Video ... then just drag the mpeg file to the window, and follow the instructions...
this should probably only be done for personal viewing tho, if yer gonna trade the show, i'd archive and trade the orig .mpeg file ONLY...
still at a loss as to why an mpeg1 was made with DVD frame rates :hmm:

have you tried getting the specs for the problem show J? you can use Gspot on pc [ http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ ]...i wonder if maybe theres some sort of spec inconsistencies with DVD format? :hmm: or justa damaged file?
i started by creating a data DVD and then added the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders and the data.. i click burn.. but what options on here should be checked? Do I want to use Joliet? thanks in advance.

some DVD players can handle Joliet naming, some can't...either research for yer particular model to find out or just leave it DISABLED...unless yer burning temporarily to +/-RW, i would check Finalize too

I'm surprised that only certain drives can handle Joliet naming. I thought it was a file system feature in the creation of the disk image. Whether it can be read should be a software issue, if the operating system doesn't support Joliet it should skip those headers and return the unexpanded filenames.
Usually when I burn data cds/dvds I turn on both Joliet and Rock Ridge as a matter of habit.

jazzbo's right...disregard what i said, i thought you were burning a DVD-Video not a data disc...my bad
Thanks to all for the replies...i'll try and burn it tomorrow.

Yeah, this is what confuses me the most. That is why i didn't tell Nero to continue anyway.
It is a video i downloaded from WinMx...a long time ago. i think it was from a dude in Italy, so i kind of wondered if maybe there were some kind of NTSC/PAL problems that i was missing, even though gspot says it is NTSC. Also, i've heard that gspot is sometimes wrong, but not sure of exactly what types of errors it makes, so i was hoping for some clairification on that end.
Thanks again to all.
well my intension is to use it as a video.
gnomebaker dosen't have a specific DVD-Video option
i figure i could just toss in the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders and burn it
i just winged it and burnt it as AAR said and it plays fine.
cool deal.

Hi everyone,
I have been burning all my dvd's with nero 6 and have never had problems until I started burning the DL's. My burner has the capability and Nero 6 appears to work, but the dvd's always come out choppy. They oftenly freeze while playing and sometimes will not ever get past the menu to even play (they will play stuck in the menu which will go back and forth from fuzzy to clear video). It's strange and I thought I'd ask here before I continue to try and solve the issue through testing and waste boatloads of moolah with each ruined dl dvd. I'm wondering if the software or media might be my problem. Does anyone have any reccomendations on other burning software to try? Is it as simple and straight forward to use as Nero?
Thanks in advance to all reading and/or responding to this!

Which DL media discs to use use? I have used Verbatim DVD+R DL made in Singapore disc with my Plextor 716A and I used Nero 6.6.

The ones I have are Dynex. It could very well be the media. I have never tried any other brands.

i'm guessing its the media...Dynex uses multiple manufacturers including AN, CMC, MKM, etc...some are known for decent quality discs, some are cheap crap...best to stick with a company such as TDK for DL media at this point.
here's a good resource for researching quality of CDR/DVDR brands and manufacturers:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
you can also check brand comparisons at cdfreaks.com and videohelp.com

I don't see the point in taking the time to reply to someone just looking to get a quick question answered and not answering them.. seems pointless.. hopefully someone is cool enough to answer my question. Peace.

Open up your DVD burning program (you have one of those AND a DVD burner right?)
Whatever you're using, select a watchable DVD. Drag everything in the VIDEO_TS folder into the burning window and hit burn.
Go to Technobabble...there's literally dozens of threads on the same exact topic - read through them and you should be good to go.
Post in Technobabble with more questions.
TV...that's a sweet pic. Hahaha

Saved from The Lounge and moved to Technobabble.
If you just want to play the DVD on your computer, I highly recommend VLC from videolan.org. Just open it up and point it to your VIDEO_TS folder and it should play your DVD. Also, feel free to search this forum for similar questions and more information.

When I burn DVD's do i need to include the md5 files with the rest of the VIDEO_TS files?

If you are speaking of data dvd's, for archival/trading purposes, then yes. After the burn you should verify the files with the md5.

Hey I am also having an issue. I have downloaded these vob files and now I don't know what to do with them...
I don't know what I want them to be converted to. Something I can watch, that's all I know. :hmm:
AAR.oner
2005-11-01, 01:24 PM
no need to convert Mspacman14...
a DVD's files consist of .ifo, .bup, and .vob files [for shows from here, you'll also have a checksum (.md5), and info text, and possibly artwork]
you can burn a "watchable DVD" using the DVD burning program you normally use...it might help us t walk you thru if you'd post the program you use [Nero, etc]...but basically, just select the "DVD-Video" format and drag all the above files [located in the VIDEO_TS folder]...
to watch on yer comp, i suggest VLC [ http://www.videolan.org/ ]
