YouTube livestream captures not allowed?

Today I uploaded a stream capture from one of the Coachella livestreams, and it was pulled because no YouTube-sourced material is allowed. Can we re-evaluate that rule for livestreams? I think it doesn't make sense in this case - the YouTube livestream was the only way in which this content was broadcast, and I captured at the maximum available quality and cut out the set without re-encoding the video. That's as good as it's possible to be; we're not likely to ever get pro-shot videos from recent Coachellas without Youtube in the lineage, so this rule is excluding a lot of good content.

I think a rule against Youtube-sourced content makes perfect sense as a special case of a rule against unnecessary re-encoding of videos. This is how DIME handles it, for example - Coachella livestream captures are allowed there, but the ones that were reencoded after capture were quickly banned. Believe me, I don't want unnecessary Youtube compression in my collection any more than anyone else does. But I don't think that applies to captures of content that was originally and only made available via YouTube.

Unfortunately, TTD has had a completely inconsistent policy over the past few years regarding what can and cannot be uploaded. We can find audio from lossy sources, absurdly upsampled or officially released. Moderators either don't see it or don't react. Dime is much better in this regard.

Anyone can download a youtube video post-stream via 3rd party soft like jdl, I don't see the need to torrent it here.

If you see something, say something. Some older posts came before some official releases, but there are also mistakes made by uploaders, and straight up intentional doings in this regard. Dime is strict in some ways, but not so much in other ways. They ban audience recordings of performances that have been officially released which is kind of annoying. They also let things slide in terms of lack of source info or lossiness at times.

The site is supposed to be known sources.

The need is because it's a medium-sized pain to actually capture the stream in the highest quality, clip it without reencoding, and prepare a text file. It's useful for one person to do the work and create a canonical version of a show, and it's much more efficient for one person to do the capture for every set and let downloaders grab/request the ones they care about. We don't need everyone capturing streams privately without any sharing for the same reason that we don't need 30 people at every show capturing an audience recording for later listening - that's what the sharing is for.

For one example of how this can be non-trivial, DIME has a lot of 1080p H.264 pro-shots from Coachella this year, despite 4K being available, because 4K was only available in VP9 and YouTube made it harder to get the VP9 streams than the H.264 streams. A lot of people ran yt-dlp with default settings and didn't realize they weren't getting the highest available quality.

And that's on DIME, where people who do this sort of thing on a regular basis congregate. Reddit is full of captures made with screen recording software, or reencoded with bloat, or AI upscaled, all sorts of problems like that. TTD has the opportunity to provide a useful service by facilitating the sharing of well-done captures.

I am pretty sure we removed the you tube restriction last year and aslong as it follows under the format guidelines, it was okay. I will confirm and report back.

After reviewing policy and events that upload was pulled both times in error, I believe retired PM'd you about the mistake. The policy was changed somewhat recently and some admins and moderators may have not gotten the message I will alert them, feel free to post all the Coachella you please. Youtube and most hi-def streams are ok to upload as long as they follow the standards expressed in the FAQ.
