Good External Harddrive????

I just bought, AND THEN read alot of reviews about the Western Digital "My Book" External Harddrive, 500 GB. About 8 out of 10 of these were bad reviews, saying this product basically sux. None of them suggested any other brand or type. Anybody have any suggestions????? I had thought 129.00 for 500 GB sounded good, and it's on "backorder" from Dell. Does anyone else use this? or another external HD??? Thanks. SHould I send this WD-My Book back, or just try it out. Some folks say, "works great, no problems" others say "waste of money." THanks alot. You guys are always helpful.

Re: Good External Harddrive????

I just buy a generic case and a generic drive (like seaquist or whatever), put the drive in the case, connect power and usb, format and voila. external drive. I've got two that both work great they're made by different companies but probably from the same factory in China anyways by the look of them. The cases are $40CDN here and the drives are just the normal kind you can buy anywhere, prices dropping all the time. Only drawback is transfer time takes longer than an internal otherwise its the same as adding another drive to the comp.

Re: Good External Harddrive????

I've had a Seagate FreeAgent 500gb model for about 4 months now and no complaints at all. File transfer speeds are decent using usb2, but are on par with regular drives when using esata. I recommend them to all my friends and they have been using them as well with no faults I have heard of. BTW. My father has a WD 500 usb2 only and his has worked fine as well. Good luck in your search.

I like laCie's Porche models.. .those things are slim, high capacity, quiet, look good, etc..

but honestly, anything witha decent drive and USB2 is fine... you really want to be sure it's the highspeed UBS2, though.
