Hi all,

Am I right in assuming that an audio capture from BBC iPlayer (streaming audio or 'listen live') is a lossy format and therefore not allowed here?

From what I can gather, the BBC seems to be streamed at a bitrate of 128 kbps and uses the AAC+ codec.

To my ears, such streams can sound at least as good as the 'live' FM equivalent (better in many cases because they are free from broadcast interference and breaks in transmission / reception).

So, before I post my Radio 2 show, can you confirm whether of not this will be allowed?

Ta!

not allowed, as per our FAQ

http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/faq.php?faq=new_faq_item

1. All seeds must be CD quality, lossless audio in FLAC, APE, or SHN format.
No seed that has been compressed to a lossy format at some point in the past will be accepted here. This includes mp3, ogg, aac, or any other lossy format. Also note that lossless filetypes other than FLAC, APE, and SHN are not permitted; this includes WAV, AIFF, ALC, MKW, Windows Lossless, Real Lossless, and any other lossless format.

12. Webcast rips and Digital Satellite Broadcasts are not permitted on The Traders' Den.
At the current time, webcasts and digital satellite radio broadcasts (such as xm radio) are not held to any reasonable quality standards. We are aware that there are some nice sounding webcasts and digital satellite radio broadcasts available in some locations, but at this point it would be a slippery slope to try to regulate what separates quality from not quality in these areas.

Yes, that's what I thought and thanks for the clarification. I fully understand (and agree with) the policy on this but I guess I find it a little strange that had I captured the direct FM radio broadcast I would have been allowed to share it, even though the pre-broadcast source would have been recorded and/or compressed to a lossy format before going out on air...

What's the source info for the assertion that the FM broadcasts are "recorded and/or compressed to a lossy format before going out on air... "
???
