I hate to bump this, but here we are again. The site will close by the end of this month if no one else takes it over. I can not keep up this site anymore.
Hey Lynne, I'm putting out the ask to some more technically-oriented music geek friends. Can you give me a summary in a couple paragraphs of what particular knowledge/skills it would require to run this site, so I can pass it on?
Thanks in advance, and I hope it doesn't come to that, but I am grateful for all you've done, and for Xavier for keeping it going for a bit longer.

TTD is the best of ALL of them. UNTOUCHABLE. A sad day, but I get it. I for one will always remember the insurmountable joy obtained seeing a new, unblocked glorious torrent come down the page. The Best.
Travel safely TTD, happy trails.
Thanks a Bazillion.

Let's hope all works out for the best! I've been a member since 2004 but have just recently begin to appreciate how much better this site is than others of the same content. The downloaders tend to seed longer and the Moderators are much easier to deal with than other places.
Let's hope for another 20 years of this enjoyable site and pray that someone has the skills and desire to keep TTD alive.

Yikes seems I came just in time to say thank you for your efforts. As a developer I empathise with the position you find yourselves in. I made a custom commercial site with PHP and had to explain it would cost too much to update it after 10 years.
A database I use it 10 years past support but does what it does the best and I have export everything to PostgreSQL to get the modern benefits.
I wish you all well and look forward to seeing what xavier242 might do.

Shocking news. I genuinely hope though, that someone else takes it over, it would be really sad to have all that stuff and so many memories wiped off.
Anyway, thank you for everything you did so far throughout those years (19 for me), hopefully the storm will be soon over and sun will come out again over TTD.

So I got a message from my buddy recovering from 'rona2024, and he just signed up here and has to wait 48 hours before he can post - spambot cool off period? Parts of our chat are quoted below until he can talk here... Anyway, there is some hope, but it will need to be a bit of a team effort, gang!
so it looks like i have to wait 48 hours to post. i would be interested in the PHP and server stuff, not the admin/content stuff.
i sent a note the "webmaster":
he's had many offers. but the key is he likely needs more than one person, and they need to coordinate at some level
...as long as the division of labour and responsabilities is well defined
So, folks, there is hope alive! I think we're going to need some new team members to do day to day admin things and of course it will either happen or not happen, but it could keep on happening here! It can. I'm not sure how we all can co-ordinate this but let's try! I can be a part of it - maybe you can, too!
Let's see what happens, gang! Stay tuned! Sign up?

Even if money isn’t the reason for the closure, someone still has to pay for it and it’s currently at a $1000 deficit and has been running on a deficit for years I believe. Is Lynne supposed to keep paying for the site even if someone takes over the tech side? More money could get someone to work on the tech side of the site for a fee if people really wanted to save the site. But people aren’t even donating enough just for the basics currently needed.

Nothing lasts forever, but I rue the days the Internet loses a cultural resource like TTD. It's a testament to taping — really, the option is silence, and a concert chronology showing "no known recording" — that the craft somehow manages to outlive the technology that runs this platform.
Please keep us posted as a successor site emerges. And deepest gratitude to all who made this one possible. Thank you!

Considering this site has been active so long and it has so many active users is there no way to fix this? If we have someone taking it over how do we assist them in making the new site a success? Is there a donation page or somewhere that users who want to make sure it succeeds can help?

Paypal are bitches who don't like porn or legally grey music distribution.
But you could buy bitcoin on Paypal and then send that to TTD's wallet. Although the buy and transfer fees are not good compared to Coinbase.

You can also buy and send Bitcoin on CashApp, Venmo, Robinhood, Kraken.

Last time I went on a downloading binge before this place almost went away. This time, I'm on a smaller downloading binge, but I'm definitely doing some uploading! Bigly BT has this neat little thing that automatically tags where something came from. So consequently, I shut down everything else, and I'm uploading all known TTD torrents, at least in the last two and a half years since I switched to the iMac. Just in case.
Anyhow, Xavier, hope you get answers soon, and get well soon! Don't you dare die on us, good sir.

I hope that somehow TTD will continue. I sure the hell won't go to DIME, and when I looked into other sites 2 years ago when we had the last closedown care I didn't find anywhere else where I felt comfortable.
I'm certainly not going to stop mastering shows. I might just have to take names of people who are interested in my future shows and circulate the shows via wetransfer links.

I hear ya about DIME. I have two years worth of recordings to upload, was about to start binge uploading, then got this message. Without this site there is no future to live trading. If we allow TTD to close then the labels have won and we all should give up and go back to our day jobs
Warning: mushy emotional content ahead
I'm quite saddened by the closure of TTD. There's too many names of contributors to specifically mention, so I just wanna say how thankful I am to have been a participant here. There's nothing really else I can say than thank you thank you thank you. Without really getting due credit, your generosity made my hobby an amazing fucking blast.
I'm now entering the final innings of my life & when I reflect back to the early 80s when the mere idea that, for example, I'd some day be able to enjoy Led Zeppelin's entire 1971 tour of Japan (from multiple tapers!) and how all those magnificent, amazing, historical artists who I loved would honor us fans by playing live for us one more time..... and now knowing they never will (or can't) again.... it's like the tragic sudden slamming of a door shut.
I'll never ever be able to see Paul McCartney or Brian Wilson or Dave & Ray Davies or The Zombies or Jimmy Page or Elton or Crosby Stills & Nash again. These amazing heroes rocked it to the end & I was so lucky to have seen (and recorded) their performances... and to all who are reading this message, God bless you for sharing these naughty unofficial recordings -- even to the extent of learning how to tastefully use modern software to enhance our enjoyment of them --- I am popping-open & raising my cold Heineken to you.
These wonderful memories are but mere zeros and ones on our hard drives, CDs & DVDs.... but they sure represent a whole lot more, don't they?
Does anyone remember a time when only a handful of The Beatles' BBC performances existed and they were on awful multi-gen vinyl pressings titled "Yellow Matter Custard" ???
If you're a fan of late 60s rock, did you ever think The fuckin' Zombies would reunite and perform "Odessy and Oracle" live?
I never thought in a million years I'd get to record Crosby Stills Nash & Young from the 2nd row. But I did. Just a few feet away from Neil's son, seated in his wheelchair.
The last time Sir Paul McCartney performed at the United Center in Chicago, I stretched my arm out (nearly dropping my recording gear) and as he left the stage, he jumped up and high-fived me.
Seeing the 2003 iteration The Yardbirds at the Abbey Pub in Chicago. Wow.
Getting caught at the 2001 Chicago Blues Festival by a rent-a-cop who asked me if I was "making illegal bootleg recordings"... and at the Neil Young concert in Tinley Park in 2000 when I argued and argued for over an hour about how I was doing nothing morally wrong and NO, I am not surrendering my MiniDiscs. HAHAHAAH!
Why did these experiences happen? Because sharing live recordings is fucking cool to the tiny few who understand and I wanted to be there to get a tiny sample of the thrill and share it here. So, it's because of you on TTD that I had these experiences. I want to tell everyone that. You are why I got those wonderful memories.
I'm hoping heaven includes a listening room for us to meet and have a laugh and a listen forever. See you there.

This site is a torrent tracker requiring login/password. There's also a forum I've mentioned on the previous page, also requiring login/password - where it is possible to run private torrents and to post links. There is a "blogspot" model - a site having a "c-box" (or a "shout box"), where uploaders have to use login/password, but their links (posted in the "box") are open for everybody. Lastly, the kind of a specialized forum where links are in the open like Guitars101. (In any case, as long as certain popular upload sites are used, it's even possible to upload to them without logging to the said upoad sites.) So there are at least four different models for a new site.

Very sad to see the demise of this fine website. Big thanks to those who managed to fan the embers of STG into something that lasted for 20 years, that is quite an achievement, and one I am very thankful for.
You have certainly earned the right to spend your time listening to and enjoying music without concerning yourselves with the never ending details of its distribution.
On an equally sad note I just discovered that a hard drive issue wiped out all my beloved Neko Case recordings that I downloaded from here. I will never be able to get them back as they seem to have been consigned to dead torrent land. Oy. it's always something.....

I'm going to make a rather weird suggestion. Keep the forum, but shut down the tracker. Hear me out on this. When we went through this two years ago, in the immediate aftermath it was suggested to look at the seeding opportunities link to keep old torrents from dying, which I did. What puzzled me was BiglyBT would show a torrent I'd downloaded had seeders, but the TTD tracker itself didn't. At first I chalked it up to, "Well, the site is old." It was a Fleetwood Mac concert that got my attention. BiglyBT showed four seeders, but TTD showed zero. I forced a scrape in BiglyBT and it still showed four seeders, but none here. And that's when I discovered a lot of these are floating around on DHT. I think it's about 50/50 between DHT and private torrent, based on what I've downloaded since April 2022. To prove this point, I just downloaded a rather large torrent, not flagged private, de-selecting TTD as a scrape option, and the entire thing just downloaded via DHT. I also paid attention to port numbers in the peers section. At least one seeder wasn't from here. It still reported back here that I'd downloaded it, however. I'll play around with it, because in any event my share ratio - which dropped from a 3.09 to a 3.06 just now - isn't going to matter in a couple of weeks. EDIT: On my second attempt, I flat out removed any reference to TTD from the list of sources, and successfully downloaded something over DHT, without anything bouncing back to TTD. No peers from here, nothing showing I downloaded it from here.
Tl;dr, the forum - the community, the history, the knowledge - is more valuable than the tracker at this point. And seeds (no pun intended) for the way forward were planted twenty years ago. I'll add in my editing that I'd take it on, if I had the financial resources to do it, but I won't until 2033 at the earliest, if ever.

When Yeeshkul! ceased to operate back in February 2023, a bunch of Floydheads from there launched Raving & Drooling. Some clever souls managed to preserve all the threads from Yeeshkul! and they are readable in an archive there. They don't run a tracker - all new torrents are trackerless and connect through DHT. It does mean the torrents are no longer private but that's a minor issue IMHO. If no-one steps forward to replace Xavier and handle the IT, this could well be the way forward.

I was around for Yeeshkul! closing down and moving over to Raving and Drooling. Nobody could save the site itself, and just moved the archive over to R&D and started from scratch. However, some of those torrents DO cross over to here.
If there's a way to move forward without having to start a site from scratch, while copying and pasting the archive, and just shutting down the tracker and converting all the torrent attachments (which, I checked, was tens of thousands!) into trackerless, then let's do that.

It is beyond saving. I tried to use an alternate power source but the files are all corrupted. I gave it to a friend who is an old school IT guy and he couldn't do anything with it either. It is my fault for constantly putting off transferring them to a newer drive. Stupid poetic justice that it would be the ones that can't be replaced
Thanks for asking though:wave:

I've heard about CD's deteriorating over the years but I'm happy to say that I've never had one go bad on me. And I've had them since 1987. Only time one went bad was when I dropped one getting out of my car & it hit the asphalt driveway & got scratched. I still have hundreds of cassette tapes that still play. I guess it all boils down to how you store your music, whether it be be vinyl, tapes or CD's.

A real bummer to know we only have two weeks left of this wonderful site. I've had 3 different accounts on here over time.
To keep this site running for 20 years is an incredible achievement which, would never have been possible without those who run and look after things as well as all those who have contributed over the years.
It takes a lot of hard work to keep a site like this rolling. And to think of all the changes that have occurred over the past two decades? People have passed way, some have gotten married (and divorced), watched their kids grow up, had many job and life changes along with witnessing many of our icons like Bowie, Prince and Co. make their way up to heaven.
I've had 13 house moves, been married and then divorced, travelled the world, had a few relationships, lost my mother and had a cancer cut out in the time this site has been going. So many life changes but this place has been one of the constant sources of joy and entertainment. I've loved seeing all the amazing shows uploaded and all the wonderful contributors along with all the members who have made this place what it is. A wonderful treasure.
Thank you to everyone who helped keep this site going. I've had some really tough times over the years but you guys have always been here to keep my spirits up when the chips have been down. I cannot thank you enough for the joy you have shared.

I don't understand why so many people here seem to be frustrated about DIME...
Don't get me wrong, over time (I'm a member here for almost 19 years now) I've found great music here, and (virtually) met some great people; but the same applies to Dime.
Different trackers with different rules all right, but both have their place in the music-sharing community (as have others, I have an account on the Zomb, Lossless Legs, Electric Ladyland, Jane's to name a few).
And when you sign up/get an account on either, you have to follow their rules, that's what you sign up for after all...
I'm really going to miss this place if it should shut down, and thank all the people that have kept it going for all these years, but I don't see the point of talking other trackers down.

I've had the same account since Day One, but in the aftermath of moving from Georgia to Pennsylvania, I had the username changed because of one of the reasons why I moved. But yeah, in twenty years, to sum up, I worked at a grocery store (which, coincidentally, is closing after standing up to a Death Star - sorry, Walmart Supercenter - for twenty years), left the Southeast for the Northeast, met someone, married her, had three kids, divorced, changed careers (from grocery to manufacturing to remote work to department store to auto parts store), and I'm engaged to someone I met along the way. I know, in in twenty years I've not posted as much as other places, but it was fun kinda lurking around.
It's kinda sad seeing everybody saying their goodbyes. I hope somebody or a couple of somebodies step up to continue it, but it's looking doubtful.

Going back 20 years to when I archived all my FLAC & SHN file-sets on Taiyo Yuden discs, I have also never had a problem. BUT sadly some of the folks with whom I did snail trades (remember them?) were not so choosy about the disc media they used and some of them no longer play. It's important to store CD-Rs out of sunlight as that can speed up the deterioration, and manufactured silver CD's seem to last better than CD-Rs. YMMV.

I agree it is the TYPE of blank CD you use that matters. I forgot to mention that. I used both Sony & Maxell blank CD-R's. But since those idiots at Sony decided to discontinue blank CD's for music I use exclusively only Maxell blanks. And have had no issues with them. I buy 50 pack spindles & have yet to get a bad one. I trust Maxell products because back in the old tape trading days I always used Maxell XL II's & they ALL STILL PLAY.

Since starting to accumulate CDs in 1986, I have thousands that I never play anymore. I wish I hadn't wasted so much time and $ burning CD-Rs all these years.
I did use only TY and have not had any failed discs but I never play them anymore. I load files on USB sticks for all my devices/vehicles.
I am now in the long process of replacing replacing my discs with FLACs on HDDs. Just Sunday I took 3 boxes with hundreds of officially released CDs I replaced with FLACs to a party and gave them all to friends. My brother was very happy to pick up so much Zappa he didn't have.

I had to downsize recently and didn't have space for all the commercial CD's and burned CDR's I had accumulated over the years. I kept a few that were special to me, and that I figured I would actually play again and then found a willing taker for the rest (thanks, Chris!).
Like you said...so much money spent on CDR's, jewel cases, ink and paper to print artwork, etc.. And then 99.9% of them never played. Oh, well...

10 year rule. Don't expect ANY media to be reliable after 10 years. Anyone should be moving their backups to new media every decade, it doesn't matter if its the same media type or a different type. Also, the rule of three applies. If you don't have 3 copies, you don't have a backup. Local, backup and offsite.

it's maybe very interesting to read about your storage problems and how you fix them.
But that doesn't help us with the actual topic, which is: TTD will be closed and is there a way to prevent it?
Or is there progress in the case that someone has found who can help with programming to get TTD alife eventually?

I'm the same way. Have had few problems over the decades.
The fact is it will happen, if not now, within the next 10 years. They are made with a dye that will eventually fade. Abot 40%of the Stephane masters I've worked on have disc rot issues. Nearly all the discs I burned in the 90s are shot now

as different as I might be from time to time from the other people who hang out here I never found a place online where I fit in better either, so October 19th will be a somewhat sobering day -
words can't repay the labor of love you put into this Ms. U2Lynne, thank you so much!
and thanks to the guys w the freeforums TTD v.02, giving us a place to keep the spirit flowing

First of all thank you all for running this wonderful site!
I just discovered it a while ago - did not know it existed.
So I was very happy at exploring this new wonderful site ... and now it's closing?
But I don't understand WHY TO CLOSE IT EXACTLY ON 19 October?
Just to have a record of a site that lasted EXACTLY 20 years?
So why do you need to close it now?
Since I understand correctly it is a software issue, not hardware issue.
This site can run even on 19 November 2024, and then the record will be that the site lasted for 20 years and one month. And in 19 October 2025 the record will be this site lasted for 21 years. So why to close it exactly on 20 years if you can still run for many more years or months?
So Please do NOT close the site!
It still runs! Why close it, if everybody likes this site so much?
Thanks

If you read all of this thread, plus the accompanying ones here: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=24
you'll understand that the site is in trouble.
The software that it runs on is 20 years old and unstable, the current IT administrator, xavier242, has serious health issues and cannot continue in his role. TTD is seeking a replacement with the necessary skills plus a general admin to oversee the running of the site, also there is currently a $1000 approx deficit in funds for the running costs.
It was originally due to close on September 30th, but founder U2Lynne has graciously extended the deadline to October 19th as this will be 20 years since the launch of the site.
If a new IT admin and general admin capable of keeping the site running can be found before then, there is still a chance that the site can be saved.

Well how nice for all the "members" to post here on this thread, now that the site is closing.
BUT what i really like to know is why some of you who posted here NOW, could never bother to even ONCE post a thank you on any of the shows you downloaded ??
When the site comes back if it every does, i hope the uploaders are given away to BLOCK downloaders who never contribute ANYTHING.

I just want to chime in and thank everyone who has helped me enjoy and expand my music collection for something like 18 years (I can't remember when I actually found this site, but it was around when I moved 20 years ago).

Maybe no one reads the original post. Or maybe the answer is buried in the pages.

I know we were supposed to pull down any shows that were older than 30 days. Given the site's sad possible future, is it okay to turn them back on again, or will that just wreak havoc?

Man I first got introduced to this site because a guy I'd been trading ween & dead shows with via snailmail/cd included a note about it and how it's got some serious gems available as long as I can get online, etc.. Thanks for all the great tunes guys.
Anyhow, once again, thanks for the vibes, I'll catch ya in the lot.

I gotta tell you how much I appreciate the care I received when starting my exploration into live music torrents. There were several sites I found early on, but the folks here at TTD patiently answered my posts. The questions were likely asked and answered repeatedly prior to my posts. In spite of that, I got thoughtful responses every single time. Special thanks to the users, moderators and admin who took the time to walk me thru the minefield of digital sharing. You guys are the best! And, you will be missed.
Also, big thanks to all the tapers and the amazing shares over the years.

Apparently I'm too stupid for this forum software, but interestingly it was shown to me in the previews and I believe also that it was initially shown in the post, maybe it was removed.
So, in case that there will be no picture again, then something with it may be wrong, or against a rule unknown to me? Are image tags, although working, disallowed? So, tags like [ img ] URL [ /img ] ??? ;-)

Save TTD! How do we help? Is it monetarey?
Not really, even if the "conversion" to a "new" Den will probably not be cheap. But as I understood it, so far the costs to run the Den are not the issue, it is "ancient" and unmanageable technic, and this needs to be rebuilt. And since @xavier242's health does not allow it anymore to do this job, we needed someone skilled doing it.
You can read that up in this thread, just skim back to the first posting from this year in this topic.
So, if I'm not mistaken there may be found a person, or the money to pay an engaged person with the technical knowledge, to converse the old technic into a new state that can be administrated without doing hackish things. But I'm only a user and have no insight in the internal things, let us wait for an official statement, what I wrote above is only wildest guessing!

thanks to all who have kept this site going all this time, and helped keep my posts seeded as long as possible.
this site is a great resource for music that would otherwise probably not be heard by nearly as many people without it.
really hope it can keep going.
I do not have nearly the technical knowledge to run a site like this.
just hope it remains possible to have sites like this, one has to worry some, given the deteriorating world political dictatorship situation. :hmm:

All I can say is noooooooooooooo, please don't let this great website DIE. Don't let it go dark. This is my favorite torrent site, the one with the best old music -- which is all I care about. Anyway, I hope the site doesn't close but I understand people with skills are needed, people with lots of free time, dedicated people, dedication very few people have. Anyway, Go, Go, Go Tapetrader.com !!!!!
