Update: xavier242 has expressed an interest in taking over the site. We are working on this now. Most likely, the site will still close at the end of this month, but then reopen on a new server with upgraded software. I will keep you all posted.

It's been a great 18 years, but it is time to say goodbye to TTD.

Eighteen years ago, after the demise of Sharing The Groove, a few of us music sharers decided to start The Traders' Den to continue to be able to share the great live music that a few brave, awesome tapers had managed to record. One thing that was important to us was that the lineage of the shows be shared with the recordings. We also strived to weed out the non-original recordings when possible. Yes, this was new for a lot of users and I know it pissed many off, but I think in the end we managed to bring a lot of users around to our way of thinking and I like to think that the music sharing community is better for our efforts.

But now, our site is struggling. We have 18 year old software running on old servers with old PHP and MySQL and, to be honest, it would be quite the effort to bring it all up to date. The vBulletin side would not be as hard to upgrade, but our tracker is even older than our vBulletin software and it would require a lot of rewriting of the code to make it compatible with the newer versions of PHP and MySQL that we need. We've done our best to try to keep the site just chugging along, but I think there is just nothing we can do at this point to keep things moving smoothly without a major upgrade.

So, it is with a heavy heart that we have decided to close down TTD at the end of this month.

I want to thank our fearless moderators for all their time and effort on this site. I know it hasn't always been easy for them answering the same questions over and over again, but they did it. They also had to deal with some rather interesting characters that came along, but they always seemed to keep their cool while doing it. They put in many hours of their time just helping to make TTD the best site we possibly could. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! This site couldn't have reached it's potential without your efforts!

I also want to thank all of the tapers. This site couldn't have existed at all if it wasn't for you all. Taping isn't a hobby just anyone can get into. I think you need to have nerves of steal to get your equipment past security into some shows. And then to have to stand still to make a great recoding instead of jumping up and down with the music... well, you guys are all heroes in my eyes, so thank you all!

To all the uploaders, well, this site obviously would never have lasted at all without you guys. Even during our rocky server times, you still managed to stick in there and upload. Yes, I know it was frustrating, but you still did it with very little complaining. So thank you all for your continued efforts and all the time you put into each of your uploads!

To all the users, this site also couldn't have lasted this long without you. You guys stuck with us through all the hard times as we tried to get this site going in the direction we wanted it to go. And even though we never pushed for donations, you all managed to contribute enough every month to keep us going. Thank you!

One last think about the site, right now I have the site back to using cloudflare. I know this will break the tracker for a few of you. However, if I turn off cloudflare, then it breaks the whole site. So, for the next two weeks, I am going to leave it as it is right now. I am sorry about this. And for those of you seeing a white page.... it seems some browsers are automatically redirecting to https instead of http if we are using cloudflare. I know Safari doesn't do this, but the latest version of Firefox does. You can turn it off in Preferences > Network Settings > unclick the box next to Enable DNS over HTTPS.

So long TTD, you will always have a special place in my heart!

What a bummer. I know this is selfish of me, because I am not an admin that is trying to fix everything all the time to keep it going, but I loved this site because I could post everything I recorded and not have to worry about certain bands not allowed, etc. I really enjoyed sharing all my music on here and intended on starting my series back up on here. I will miss not having TTD to look forward to daily looking for what's new and sharing my recordings. The selfish part of me wishes you'd just keep it going and dedicate your time as you have, but I really understand. I'm gonna miss this site a lot!:clap:

HI,
So sad to learn about the end of the adventure of The Traders' Den, but also so happy to have had the opportunity to find so many great concerts during all these years on this site and to have been able to build up a collection of concerts that make me happy!
thank you from southwestern France and good luck to all.

Well damn, I wasn't expecting this. It feels like TTD is one of those places that has always existed. Gonna be real weird to not have a... fourth or fifth torrent tracker to obsessively refresh. DIME, Lossless Legs and YEESHKUL! are my main places, and I also browse etree, but that place kinda sucks.

Thanks for all the great memories, even if I never really talked here. Coincidentally, one of my neighbors died today too. I'm not sure which is more important. :disbelief

Thanks for all the music! My hard drive (and backups!) have more music than I can possibly listen to. TTD, Dime, Etree, and others have provided more music than I can ever possibly listen to at this point in my life. I hope that future generations will occasionally look back to our era of live music and find that it influenced the music emerging in their own time.

Sorry to see the den go, not that many trackers left and this was the most reliable one I experienced. Many fine tapers and transfer jockeys shared music here, and TTD's closing will leave a hole in online trading in general and for me personally.

Thanks to those tapers and uploaders whom I hope I haven't seen the last of, and thanks to the staff here that made that sharing possible.

I am heartbroken to hear this news.
I have been a member since November 2004 and regard this as the best torrent site with the best-designed interface.
Ironically, it is running really smoothly today after recent hiccups!

Would there be any possibility of someone else taking over the site?
I'm sure there would be plenty of volunteers, and a fundraiser would no doubt produce a good return. I, for one, would be glad to contribute funds and time.

Meanwhile, my thanks go to you, Lynne, and alll the others who have helped run this fine site during the past 18 years.

You will be sadly missed!

this sucks, but i know all things must pass.
i've shared stuff on a few different sites, dime, hunger city, all along the watchtower (if that's the name of the german site with all the Dylan shows) but this one, TTD, is the most fun and rewarding because of the members here, the various forums and the way we can bullshit around and share the comradarie with other crazy music freaks, which is no minor thing, imho.
anyway, its been a fun 8 or so years for me.
thanks everybody! happy trails!

What a well written post U2Lynne. Thank you for the explanation about the systems' status. There must've been a lot of emotion (kept out) to keep it on point and easy to understand the reasoning behind closing down.

Thanks for letting me be a part of this fine site. TTD always went deeper than other places with obscure shows, hard to find artists. I found a bunch of stuff here that was as satisfying as browsing a record store. Like a friendly neighborhood tavern closing, this will leave a vacancy that may not be filled.

As I listen to the massive amount of music at hand, I'll have a kynd thought for the folks who helped me acquire it all. Thanks TTD

can't believe TTD was only a few years old when I came around. I've tended to use Dime more often, but I appreciated the community aspect that this forum provided that Dime lacks. bunch of cool dudes here.

As one of a small group of prolific tapers I feel I will have to retire now. I have nowhere left to post things, and my online archive is now going away. I put my shows here thinking I could retrieve them from here until the end of time. I will miss the opportunity to share all my work with you. I can't really think of a place to put all this stuff these days. I'm not paying for enough space to host it all as links, and there aren't any good torrent sites left. You are breaking up a unique community. Shame on you

Would like to think you Lynne for this great site. One of my first stops everyday. You can never have enough great music. That's what you and the people who recorded shows and shared with all of us. Only been here 4 years but will really miss you as part of my day.

Happy Trails to you until we meet again.

Buy TTD out and run it yourself. Sounds like a lot of fun to keep maintaining tech from before Facebook and iPhones were things. You could always post your shows to Usenet newsgroups. Even the Pirate Bay is a shell of itself these days.

How typical of a nouveau, self-righteous copyright extremist with uninformed and nonsensical freedom of speech citations--a hyperconsumer and not an artist obviously--to expect someone else to do all the hard work and spend all the money, to whine and spew negativity at first opportunity, take no lead whatsoever in fomenting new solution when the old go the way of all things, and invoke shame upon those who magnanimously and generously did generate solutions for nigh two decades.

Absolutely classic. No wonder things just keep getting more fraught and suckier. Thank you, haven't heard a "take my ball and go home" in a few days.

Yeah I get it, but I'm old, and prefer the old school tech stick around for all us fogies to do things the way we're used to. I've never even seen nor understand Usenet, and no no no to TPB. That's not a place for quality bootlegs. Dime is of little use to me because they delete the shows once inactive, so only have a rolling archive of current torrents.

I'm also bummed because I have about 100 shows I've yet to post

haven't heard a "take my ball and go home" in a few days.

"Shame on you"?

That's pretty harsh.

I, too, am upset and saddened by this news.
Lynne has been running this site, unpaid, as a labour of love, for 18 years.
I hope she may reconsider, or that an angel or angels with the necessary skills may step in and take up the reins.

She is not obliged to provide free hosting for your torrent files.
You could always re-upload some to DIME or LL.

Meanwhile, shame on YOU for your outburst.

:nono:  :grr:

EDIT:
Dime is of little use to me because they delete the shows once inactive, so only have a rolling archive of current torrents.
If you want torrents on DIME to remain active, keep seeding 'em! Inactive torrents here on TTD are removed, too!

Sad news but I get it. Running a site like this is a lot of work and is only a labor of love. Most people don't contribute anything and a few contribute everything. Wish everyone who put in the effort the best. Those who have the new content will still have it and will still share it. Just harder to find it like the old days before torrenting.

Would there be any possibility of someone else taking over the site?
I'm sure there would be plenty of volunteers, and a fundraiser would no doubt produce a good return. I, for one, would be glad to contribute funds and time.

Thought the same thing, I'm sure there would be someone who would love to take over the site, and a fundraiser would be a great idea. Hopefully these options were considered or will be considered before the end of the month. Either way, this has been a great site, and was important in my introduction to live recordings and torrenting in general.

Thank you all so much for The Trader's Den and everything it offers. Your meticulous documenting of lineage and preserving these recordings in the highest quality is a service for future generations. It kindled my love of live Zeppelin and the hobby of taping shows, even if I was downloading FLAC files for months on end on my parents' dial-up connection. Truly dark days, but days I look back on fondly now. Godspeed everyone, this lurker wishes you well.

I understand your reason to stop, but it still makes me incredibly sad. Besides the good music I found here, it also takes away part of my daily routine.

This place was very special and I will also miss it because here things were possible that were not possible elsewhere.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed over the years to making this a very special place. I will miss it and all of you.

I think that many would be happy if you could start all over again with your knowledge and experience.

Bye......

I'm sad to say, it's time to go
But until we meet again along the road
Remember this on your journey home
When you hear the thunder roar, you're not alone
We wish you well
We wish you well
In times of trouble, may your heart be strong
We wish you well
We wish you well
Until we meet again
We wish you well.

I feel compelled to chime in with my thanks and sincere gratitude for the years of enjoyment this site has brought me. Checking in with TTD first thing in the morning is something I have done virtually every single day since 2005-04-08. At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, there will be a hole in my life starting October 1. I just feel sad, hard to explain to anyone who isn't a long time member of this community or others like it. The only other thing I can compare this to is the day what.cd disappeared. So long, and thanks for all the fish...

Sad to hear this, I've been here for most of the 18 years and have uploaded a load of my torrents, some of which were banned by Dime, so it's a real shame it's closing down.

I kinda guessed something was up when there were problems logging on and moving between pages which I put down to my PC being a pile of junk!!!:lol4:

Gee... Thank you so much. This site has been really great and it was here I got my start with internet music collecting. I downloaded terabytes and there was always more. I haven't been around much in recent years, but I have always considered it to be the best torrent site of it's type. It saddens my heart to say goodbye to an old friend. Fare The Well.

I am saddened by the news that TTD will be closing. Last week we lost the Queen, and now TTD... two pillars of many people's lives gone...

I've had a great run since signing up with TTD in October 2007. Through TTD I've come to know many artists I would otherwise have never heard of, and got ample exposure to the live magic of the artists that I did know.

In any case, the reasons for shutting down TTD are understood and appreciated. I once ran a Shawn Lane tribute site - a job that quickly became untenable due to complicated software and server security issues. I can only imagine what it takes to run a tracker site like TTD!

In any case, a BIG thanks to all who've made TTD possible - and indeed to all who have been sharing all this brilliant music over the years.

Vale TTD.

Thanks to Lynne, the TDD crew (coders, mods, etc), tapers and uploaders . . . . this is a sharing site that I will sincerely miss. The people are nice; the rules are common sense and my musical horizons have been expanded beyond anything I expected. There is music here that I can't find anywhere else. . . . . change is hard for most of us and I heartily salute the team as they've made the hard decisions to move on. When one door closes . . . .

Farewell to TTD, and thanks to all involved in the site. And of course, thanks to everyone that uploaded here. In particular, i have a lot less available harddrive space due to stellar contributors like dandrew and DoctorZap.

TTD will be missed, but life goes on. Thanks for the music.

Many thanks for the time, effort, and generosity to all involved in creating and sustaining this awesome resource. All of you have enabled many of us to hear great quality music, discover new bands, and rethink why lossless music needs purity standards. My grateful appreciation to all involved.

Ah bummer. BUMMER!

Joined in 2007, checked the site weekly for goodies (and found many).

Wish there was some alternatives - freeze the site as an archive for viewing-only (reading old Freezer posts), hand the keys over to some motivated volunteer, ah fuck i dont know! Ha ha.

Very sad news to hear of the bar closing down, but very understandable. In addition to the reasons given, no doubt it is a tremendous expense to run this place, and thus such a day was inevitable.

Thanks for the years of joy. Hell, even just for A/B Road - having that as a reference made watching the Get Back documentary that much more enjoyable.

This is a place I will tell people about for years to come. You cats who ran this place should be mighty proud of what you achieved here.

Thanks for everything over the years.

Now I need to figure out how to archive some of the comment threads from here. Like some of the hilarious Freezer ones.

YES please - Freezer's Revenge absolutely must be preserved for all eternity. It is without a doubt one of the greatest things ever produced on the internet, on par with the Picolax thread:

That's some bad news.

The complete archive and many bootlegs will be lost forever and never be seen again.

I hope the uploaders and users will switch to the same site so that the comunity stays together.

Thanks to everyone, discovered a lot of good music here.

Confused. I've just downloaded a 3gb torrent. I see seeds, I see peers, I'm uploading smoothly, the site is running faultlessly for the last few days.

Why must TTD close?

There's no site to switch to. I've looked. Nothing as strict on quality, nor as small of a NAB list. Friends for years are going to lose touch and everything here will be lost to time. A hugely important part of my life and those of many tapers/uploaders will be lost forever. Thousands of people are now essentially homeless

Jeez, that's a bit strong. I've loved your releases (I'm assuming the 'resequenced and remastered' official output I've seen on Demonoid was yours).

In all the years I have been here, the thing that always kept me coming back was the diversity. As highlighted by the links you put at the bottom or your post, many of the sites I've seen are devoted to a band or style of music. Here was always a place I could come to, like any great music store. I never know what I would find, but I knew I would probably enjoy it.

You will be greatly missed, and fondly remembered.

Thank you
