Lightbulb Seeder Control of torrents

Had this idea today, wondered what others think, here is the scenario....
Ok, I put together a custom made DVD of a Live show and want to share it
with fans on the TTD. My first suggestion would be to have control over the
torrent so if there is a problem with it, and can just edit the page like you
can at bt.etree.org and just check a box to delete the entire post and torrent
for the server. Then my second thought is, to be able to remove the torrent
later down the line when there are just a few people left, and lock it, so no
one can download it, but the thread could stay up, and I could offer B&P for
late comers, but still let the final few people finish their download up. I think
the original seeder has the right to retract their offer of a seed, as well as
post a seed. This way you don't keep getting these stragglers coming in, and
always needing a window (seed) opened up, seems like countless amount of
times I've had to reseed. just kinda thought some more control over it might
help things, because once its out to the masses, I'd have no problem with
a handful of B&P's if those people in return would share in the B&P section to
others who can't download huge DVD torrents. what do you all think ???

Re: Seeder Control of torrents

I don't do a lot of downloading, so it doesn't matter either way to me, but the way I see it is "you snooze, you lose". No one should feel obligated to reseed, but at the same time, isn't this whole thing about sharing? If so, all it takes is one kind person to share by reseeding a request.

As for the original seeder having the right to pull his/her seed - of course they do, but I'd hope it would be after someone else has started seeding. Otherwise, why "appear" to be kind (by originating) when it's possible you might be pulling the seed later on? The original seeder should feel a little sense of responsibility, I think - just as the leechers should feel a little responsible in helping to seed after they've downloaded. Of course for some, it's not possible, so they may be excused.

Excuse me if I missed the point. I'm still new to this whole process and there is lot's more for me to learn.

Re: Seeder Control of torrents

I guess I am just saying I see a trend happening and it happens on almost
all bit torrent sites, I post a show, people start downloading such as the
4-20 MMW DVD show, and the first two weeks are the busiest when most
people grab it and there are a fair amount of peeps seeding their part. Now
its been two weeks and there have been a total of almost 200 downloads,
and there are no seeders, but 3-5 leechers, its like the whole thing is starting
over again fresh, problem being is it doesn't seem to take off because the
majority of the interested people are done with it, leaving me (original seeder)
feeling obligated to seed again...I'd just like to be able to lock it out, and
move on, now if anyone else would like to repost the show and torrent it
thats fine, or post a offer to burn B&P's for folks. I love to share, but with all
the good music and stuff out there that I'd like to get out to people, it just
makes things difficult with bandwidth and all. But I do think at the least the
seeder of the show if having problems with the torrent, should be able to fix
things and upload another torrent without having to contact a mod to pull it.
I am not saying to leave someone stranded if 3 people are still D/L the show,
I would seed till they were done of course, but no new leechers could start.

my $.02 cents.

Re: Seeder Control of torrents

So basically you want to be able to pull the torrent attachment (but not take it off the tracker), finish off the leechers, and then have the show moved to Inactive when they are all done?

I'd have to look into this because once we take the attachment out of the firs thread, the torrent statistics will disappear from the show and it would be difficult to see when everyone was done. Manytimes, when you connect to a torrent, you aren't connecting to everyone still on that torrent and so just looking at your own client won't necessarily tell you when everyone is 'done' (a few clients do keep track of this, but not all).

I see what you mean, BUT like I said, "You snooze, you lose". The late comers will have to be a bit faster, I think. I know it may not be fair since some people have good reasons for not being able to log on shortly after you seed, but hey, it's their problem. I wouldn't like to be in their shoes, but at the same time, there has to be a point when you pull your seed. If someone is close to getting the full torrent, they should request a reseed. Now, here's the part I'm unsure of. When requesting a reseed, can anyone reseed or does the original seeder have to do it? I'm asking etiquette here, not if it's possible - I know it's possible for someone else to seed it. Of course, if someone else seeds it, they should give credit to the originator, if known and definitely not take credit themselves.

It's nice to see you care for your leechers, but when you feel the need to pull your seed, I say pull it. Everyone should appreciate that you offered it all - not how long you offered it. After 2-3 weeks, if I was a new leecher, I'd expect to possibly not get it all. That's just the way it works and what requests are for.

That's my $.02

Re: Seeder Control of torrents

Yes, Lynne thats what I'm saying, I see your point about not removing the
torrent completely from the tracker, but if there was a way to lock out new
comers to not be able to download the torrent when the original seeder
decided to move on, I don't even know if it is possible not a programmer
myself at all, but if they did try it might say unable to download from....
like a dead link of sorts, but also above it might read, this torrent is over,
please request a reseed or B&P for a trade.

And yes Ted anyone who has not altered the original folder name or contents
can continue on seeding that show, and I hear what your saying about you
snooze ya looze, but I have been getting torrents since it started and was so
VERY thankful for that one guy from time to time who would stay on for me
till I was completed, so I would have no problem seeding for 3 final peeps to
get the show as long as the last guy isn't pulling down 1 kb/sec and gonna
take 2 weeks to get it.

For some reason, I wasn't keeping your point in my brain long enough, although I really did know what you were asking/saying as I was typing. Must have been a brain fart (I have those occasionally). Yeah, I agree that your idea to lock out new downloaders would be good.

Thanks for clarifying the "etiquette" question.
