I have a super cheapie Welkin that can play raw MPEGs. From CD-R they skip and get blocky etc. but from DVD-R they play flawlessly.

goto walmart and get a cheap one for $38 and it'll play PAL. I just got a ILO DVDRHD04 (with 80gb harddisk) dvd recorder from walmart for $230 (it was on sale, regularly $278) or you can get w/o the HD version for $149 (both works great, plays PAL)
