LP4 ?
This is from an audience recording of the White Stripes Leeds Festival 2002-08-22. I've seeded it (elsewhere) because I've always assumed it was recorded using minidisc LP4. I came to this conclusion because the spectral analysis is so poor and I've been advised that the cut off on LP4 is about 13.5 kHz which fits here. My other main reasoning is that as it was from a festival, the taper would be expecting to record a lot of acts and so would be more likely to use the LP mode. The whole recording is peppered with the spikes visible here, some which are inaudible and invisible under waveform view and some others where it's the drums causing clipping. I've been unable to recreate a similar looking frequency analysis even using 96k MP3.

Re: LP4 ?
This could well be LP4. I'm in the process of preparing some MD frequency/spectral screenshots using white noise so that they can be compared easily to mp3. Should have them up next week after I've finished my exams. In the mean time - listen to it carefully on headphones and see if you can spot audible stereo artifacts. LP4 can often have quite a dramatic noise-gate effect on quiet parts, dropping all the way to silence briefly.
However, if it is LP4 then it's gonna be sounding pretty bad anyway. I taped something like that accidentally once and it really killed it. Thankfully it was the audience recording of a show where I was also getting a nice SP soundboard feed No members have liked this post.

Re: LP4 ?
Real problem with these festival gigs is the bass roll off isn't it? It might have been set up in such a way that there wasn't so much distortion. As Rob says with LP4 you sould hear disticnt 'artifacts'. Do you know who the taper is? Maybe you could ask. Here is a faq concerning MD LP:

Re: LP4 ?
Thanks for the advice. There are definitely artifacts, reminiscent of webcast warble, and it could definitely sound a lot better but it's a great show and it seems this is the only source around so it'll have to do. Possibly a tad blasphemous in these particular parts but for me, a live recording is about the performance. I certainly don't want an unnecessarily degraded (lossy) version but if an awesome show is only available on wax cylinder then that'll do me.
