Uberleech issues

I have a problem with chumps with extremely bad share ratios, especially when they try to participate in many torrents at once. They slow things down for everyone.

I use peerguardian (www.phoenixlabs.org) to block the worst of them, I maintain a list of bad ip's which my pc will not communicate with.

My question is, is it bad form to permanantly block these chumps?

Another question, how and who are the torrenters who show up on the tracker with no user infos?
I have noticed many of these ip's fall into the uberleech category.

Thanks

Re: Uberleech issues

This really bothers me. I have uploaded a TON (download 8 gigs on Phish 1996-11-16 and uploaded 18.86 gigs this week, for example) but it is all on the old tracker, so my public stats looks weak. I screen capture a shot of my client when I've done with a torrent just so I can keep a record of what I really trade up and down, but I haven't got around to contact the Powers That Be to get my ratio manually adjusted. Does that mean that you are going to assume that I am an uberleech and block me?

Re: Uberleech issues

No way man, you're not even close. I'm talkin about for example someone on phish 2-18-97 right now
who has been connected for more than 2days who has downloaded: 1.83gig and upped: 19.48mb.

Also I am not talking about just blocking someone just because of a relatively low ratio, I look at whats happening,
like if someone is leeching for days and giving next to nothing in return.

Some people are just plain clueless. I would say something in your torrent thread like 'those of you downloading more than 2 shows when you don't have a fast connection are going to get blocked from me since you are slowing down the swarm'. Sometimes that clues them in, sometimes not.

I have blocked people before. When I'm seeding and a bunch of people are firewalled - I'll block them so I can seed to those that are sharing. Or, if I see that someone has hardly uploaded anything, I'll block them. I don't know if that's bad form or not, but sometimes it needs to be done to get the show out faster so there are more seeds.

They are either users who don't belong to this site but got the torrent from someone and are downloading, or they are someone who uses an ISP like AOL where they get new IPs everytime they log on (and thus the tracker gets confused about who they are), or they are a user who is seeding from one computer and then logging on to the site from another (like both work and home).

Re: Uberleech issues

Just to chime in...

I will also ban IP's that are firewalled specifically when I upload a show just to help me get in and out faster. My thoughts are that by doing this, it enables you to theoretically get a few completes on one torrent so that you can start uploading another show. For whatever that's worth...

Some people may have honest reason's for bad ratio's,can't up-load from work etc,but once or twice is acceptable, but for the other bad ratio's,well they are just plain greedy and selfish,...
