Yellow Lights! Arrrgh!

Help - I've followed all of the FAQs trying to set my firewall and Port Forwarding right and all I get is yellow lights in BitTornado. I'm trying download and seed but things move at a crawl. I'm running Windows XT with at&t DSL. If anyone can help out I'd be really grateful, I do have a couple of DVD bootlegs I'd like to seed also but right now I think it would be ridiculously slow.

I forgot to mention that my router is a Linksys WRT45GS I've got these ports forwarded:

10000 - 10010
17000 - 17010
40000 - 40010
50000 - 50010

Also I'm running McAfee and SuperAntiVirus (probably overkill).

first. pick ONE port for your torrent client. (open the program and set the port yourself)

50100 would be a solid choice (unused by other programs)

.. next step ..

you need to know and set the IP address of your computer.

set it to something like
192.168.1.50 (IP)
255.255.255.0 (subnet mask)
192.168.1.1 (gateway - linksys default setting)

now go into your router via a web browser.
Select applications and games (port forwarding).
Open port 50100 (both TCP/UDP is fine) to 192.168.1.50

done.

* this is an example - yes it should/will work of you have the default settings in your Linksys router.
WRITE DOWN CHANGES BEFORE YOU MAKE THEM - its just the right thing to do.

well you have a lot of ports forwarded!

have you specified the range of ports (pick one...perhaps the 50000-50010) in bittornado...because it defaults to 6881-6889.

If not, click on prefernces and in the upper right hand corner specify the range you want to use.

well the thing is...you have to use the same range of ports for all three

xp firewall
bittornado

otherwise it won't work

DireWolf - I've got only one port forwarded now (50100) and the IP address/Subnet mask/Gateway are correct in the router settings. It does seem to be moving faster but I've still got a yellow light for some reason.

One more question if you guys don't mind, do I need to have separate ports forwarded for each BitTornado session I'm running or will they all use 50100 now? Thanks for the help.

LGregard - I hadn't thought of checking the ports configured in the firewall and it turns out I did need to add 50100 to the exceptions list. Although I'm still getting a yellow light...

check your port here http://www.canyouseeme.org/

normally one port for all torrents/sites. multiple (individual ports) if you use multiple computers.

with Bittornado you need one port for each torrent.

That is why you have to pick a range of 6 or 7 consecutive ports, forward them in your router...make exceptions for each one in your firewall and then specify that range in bittornado.

It should work like a charm then

Thanks for the help guys, I think it's getting real close to being solved. I am still seeing the yellow light, but I noticed that when I went to www.canyouseeme.org my IP address was different than what is shown by ipconfig.

Should I set my local IP address in the router to the IP address I'm seeing on canyouseeme.org? It seems like maybe the IP address mismatch is causing the problem now?

There are two different types of IP addresses that you need to be concerned about. There is the one given to you by your ISP and then there is the one given to your computer by your router. The one that canyouseeme is reporting is the one your ISP gives to you. The one that portforward is concerned about is the one your router gives to you. The one you get from your router is what we call your local IP and the one that we want to be static - meaning that is doesn't change. That one looks like 192.168.1.xxx. We want it to stay static so that we can forward ports through your router to that same IP. If it were dynamic - meaning it changed all the time - then you would have to go into your router all the time and let it know your new local IP.

U2Lynne - Thanks for the info, I'm learning this stuff as I go.

Unfortunately canyouseeme.org is not able to see the ports I have forwarded. I seem to have everything set up correctly as far as the router config/firewall/bittornado goes. Are ther any other settings I should look into?

so you've picked a range of ports

forwarded that range of ports in your router

made exceptions for each port in your firewall

and specified that range of ports in bittornado preferences

and it still doesn't work?

LGregard - That's correct, I've done all of the steps you listed.

Also, when I go to canyouseeme.org it doesn't recognize my ports.

There must be something stupid that I'm missing...
