Converting PAL to NTSC

I just converted a DVD with TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 and it worked beautifully! Download the trial version and try it out. I am totally pleased with the results.

Re: Converting PAL to NTSC

I find it easier to use my $30 cheapo DVD player that plays PAL and NTSC. I only bring this up in case folks read this and don't realize that option is there.

We don't allow PAL > NTSC to be seeded here so that is something to think about.

The only cheap player that I like is made by Philips. Others have issues - either audio or video. I would never seed a converted dvd.

Did you rip the DVD into one big VOB file that you then converted to NTSC?

Or was it an avi file?

Is this the newest TMPGEnc, the one I have does not do 25.00 fps to 29.97 as far as I know, although it will convert 23.97 to 29.97 with inverse 3:2 pulldown.

I just sucked the dvd (not avi) onto my drive, and copied the file with the output setting NTSC. It requires that you change the audio setting to dolby digital, then let it go. It took about 2.5 hrs for 1.3 GB. I was thrilled by the results. It was a good test, as it was a digital broadcast of Ron Carter very recently.
TMPGEnc DVD Author 3. I'm gonna buy it if not only for the chapter editing, as I transfer all my uploads here from tape. Try the trial version.

This is a DVD author, not encoder.

So it would take about 8 hours for a 4 GB DVD.

Does it let you keep menus?

I want to try IFO edit first.

Re: Converting PAL to NTSC

IFOedit works perfectly, takes about one minute to do, keeps the identical audio, and burns at normal speed, ie ten or twenty minutes insted of four hours for a full dvd. Can then be played on any almost any semi-new ntsc dvd player. Especially worthwhile if you care enough about good sound and picture to use a good player and not a piece o' crap $30 player. It has worked on all but one pal disc I've tried, of dozens.
IFOedit is freeware!

Does IFOedit keep the original chapter points? Also will it convert 16:9 aspect ratio to letterbox for TV sets that do not have the 16:9 to 4:3 option?

Re: Converting PAL to NTSC

Everything remains identical to the original, except that now it plays on ntsc players.
It's an almost perfect hack.

Yes it will keep chapter points or you may change them manually. Same you can do with aspect ratio.

Again: it doesn't convert anything, it just changes a DVD control code.

Nothing changes. You can even go back and change the DVD back to PAL once you've viewed it as NTSC. And it takes less than two minutes.

I saw an option on the bottom that read "make region free". Has anyone tried this, and if yes, what does it do?

Right. Nothing on earth can transcode a DVD in less than two minutes.

Why almost? Have you noticed any glitches?
