Attn: Linux users - need help choosing dvd drive

I'm shopping for hardware for a new Ubuntu Studio box. I had my heart set on a Plextor drive but unfortunately, their drives are not supported very well. I'm looking for comparable quality for Linux. It must excel at cd-audio, dvd-audio, and dvd data (torrents and back ups) burning.

Please suggest a trouble free, long lasting drive that will work with a Debian based distro.

Thanks a bunch
Brad

I'm currently using a Sony NEC Optiarc burner, you can find it here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16827131047R , works flawlessly under Linux and it's inexpensive.

Re: Attn: Linux users - need help choosing dvd drive

BTW, I didn't mention but I'm using the Sony NEC drive on a Ubuntu 6.10 box. I've thought about "upgrading" to Ubuntu Studio but I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle when 6.10 is working well for me. But in any event, the Sony NEC drives work fine with Ubuntu, I've had mine about three weeks and burned probably 100 or so assorted discs (CD, DVD Videos, DVD Audio, DVD Data and dual layer DVD).

Re: Attn: Linux users - need help choosing dvd drive

I'm running an old HP box that came with WinME. I've had no issues at all. To put in Studio was painless for me. I was even able to use the computer while it was installing.
Thanks for the info on the dvd writer. I haven't had any interest in dvd until I started downloading the Beatles AB_Road from here. It's huge!
Give Studio a try you can always go back.

your dvd drive is worth more than the computer.

Any dvd drive will work - they're standard hardware, no special drivers needed. However, that is not to say they don't differ in quality. Personally, I stick with Pioneer drives, which have been trouble free and read pretty much everything I've thrown at them (unlike other brands which have given me probs in the past.)

That's why I'm building a new one. I think I've gotten my money's worth from the old HP.

Thanks rosc2112 I will add Pioneer to my shortlist.
