Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

I'm sure some people on this forum already know about this, but there's feature on azureus that lets you set a automatic ratio for your bandwidth.

Go to: Preferences> Transfer> Auto-Speed - Check the box to enable download speed adjustment. The custom ratio that is set is 2.0 (download speed is double the upload limit) so just set it to 0.5 and your download speed is half the upload speed. That might help straighten out your ratio if you don't want to have to worry about it.

I just figured that out, maybe a mod should post that on the FAQs or something.

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

it's actually better to download the complete torrent as fast as you can, then leave it open to seed. if you limit your download speed, you get the pieces slower, meaning you have less of them to distribute among the swarm.

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

I'm sitting at .40. I try to keep my torrents open for a while, but my azureus randomly shuts down. Trying to figure it out. My real question though, is, since I'm new to the community, and don't have anything to offer, how can I really improve my ratio?

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

If you don't have something to seed/offer (which many people don't), the best thing you can do is seed torrents that you have when they need seeding. Look at them every day (or couple of days or however often you can) and see if there is a show that has only one seeder and many leechers. Then, seed that one. You will be doing the same thing for that show as if you were seeding a new show.

Is Azureus quitting or does it simply stop seeding the show?

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

Azureus is actually quitting. I <u>think</u> I noticed that it happens primarily when I have winamp open, playing files resident on the same drive as I'm saving to. Not positive about that yet though. More observation needed. I had been told by someone on the azureus support IRC channel that I needed a 64 bit version of java, because I have a 64 bit processor. I looked, but could not find one that said specifically that it was for an AMD Athlon. Plenty for an Opteron, however. I am still running 32 bit windows on the newly upgraded processor though. Sun never responded to an email inquiry. Any suggestions.

And thanks for the tip on reseeding, I will try to do that in the future. I need to alter the way in which I archive, store and play files to accommodate not polluting the trade pool anyway.

Thanks again,

If you're running 32-bit Windows, I'm pretty certain you do not want to run a 64-bit program. One, I don't think a 64-bit program will run on a 32-bit OS. Two, if it does run, it might mess up your system.

What Azureus version are you running? If it's a beta, maybe switch to a stable version. Also, are you using the newest Java Runtime Environment for your platform?

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

I'm running the most current stable Azureus as of about three weeks ago. and as far as java goes, their website says I'm running the most current. I was really unsure about the need for a 64 bit java inside a 32 bit environment, but I figured I'd ask. Sun themselves were no help. Always glad for the input.

Hmmm...do you run regular anti-virus and spyware checks? Have you defragmented your hard drive recently?

Oh, and foobar2000 is a much better media player than Winamp as far as traders are concerned (and it's got a small footprint). It ain't pretty, but it's pretty powerful.

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

I've been looking at Foobar, really considering it. I need to learn more about php scripting, but I believe it should be my next step.
As far as antiviirus and defrag, I do, regularly, but I also don't see why it should be an issue on a comp that I just completely rebuilt from the ground up. The only things still extant from the old system are drives, and they c and d drives were both scoured before I did a clean install of a full version of xp home followed immediately by an upgrade to xp pro. (I have in the last few weeks realized that what I really need to do is learn and utilize some form of Linux distro, but for now, I need something that recognizes both my soundcard and my media drive at the same time, without a deep approri knowledge of bash) blah blah blah

please help me make microsoft not suck

Well, foobar does use less system resources than Winamp.

That being said, maybe you need to switch to another BT client for now. I've heard µTorrent is pretty neat--I haven't ever used it, but that was because it came out after I switched to Linux.

P.S. If you want to make the switch, I recommend either Ubuntu (easiest install ever--I'm currently using this distro because SuSE removed support for my wireless chipset) or SuSE (bit more involved install, but nothing too tough--they just give you more install options).

µTorrent, foobar2000, Ubuntu

I still use a hot-rodded winamp 2.81 (base program available at winampheaven.net) but that's a personal thing, not a recommendation.

FWIW, I know this place is more than a bt site, but after a certain amount downloaded, I think something should be enforced.....I think most people will agree that the slackers on sharing the DVD torrents kill it for everyone

Just keep seeding what you have. I try to seed a show or two that is in need of help every night. That's the only way I can keep my ratio up on this and other sites.

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

Hey, I feel really bad about my aspect ratio, but my college network is wacky and firewalled and usually stops uploading torrents around the .4 ratio. For some reason it's only for this site too, when I torrent from Mininova and Demonoid I get up to 4.0 or 5.0. Any suggestions? I love this site and don't want to be a leech.

Also, when I went home over break I got up to a 2.5 on a torrent...I wanted to seed to an insane amount, but as soon as I got back to school it didn't budge for weeks.

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

Are you using the standard bittorrent ports (6881-6889) or another port? I would try using a port in the range 45000-50000 and see if that helps out (not all those ports, just pick one in there). Universities do usually firewall you, as you found out, and you can't really do much about it. Just try to seed shows that need seeding and where there are other non-firewalled peers because if you are firewalled the only peers you may connect to are non-firewalled ones.

This doesn't make any sense to me. If everything was reset on you, then surely the stats you have now are an accurate reflection of your share ratio since then: ie, since having your stats reset, you have only given back 0.08% of what you have taken. Is that what you are saying?

Or are you claiming that the number of gigs you have downloaded (approx 164) is accurate, but that the number of gigs you have uploaded is not (approx 13)? I'm not even sure that that is technically possible with our tracker. But even if it is, it doesn't make sense either, because when I called you on your ratio back in December you had downloaded about 70 gigs, and you had a godawful share ratio then. So in the past two months, you have downloaded 90 more gigs and you still have the worst ratio I have ever seen.

Pretty much any way you slice it, something's wrong. Maybe you didn't disable DHT when we shifted to the new tracker? Either way, I don't think you have a leg to stand on
