I have a number of shows on my Tivo that are recorded in Hi-Def. I'd like to take the files from Tivo and drop them into my computer, and create a DVD and maintian the Hi-Def Image.

ANy ideas how you go about this? What type of software/hardware am I going to need.

DVD-video does not support high definition. What sort of files do you get from your Tivo?

Unless you hook up your PC to your TV properly, you can't do it. Standard DVD-Video just doesn't support it.

If the question is pulling shows off the Tivo unit -- the TivoDesktop software would be the first thing to try. Unfortunately you get DRM encumbered .tivo files from that process. It is basically mpeg-2 with extra headers so you can manipulate the files with a little work.

Hacked tivo units can serve non-encrypted video. Tons of pointers on this on the net.

Caveat: I've only experimented with a non-HD tivo unit, I don't know what is supported for HD units.

Regardless, you're in the same boat at that point as the other posters mentioned in that the current dvd-video format doesn't support HD.

What about this, I output the tivo Hi-Def files into my Sony Z1, HDV Camera. Then I suppose I could download the video into my computer HD. Then I need to figure out how to produce the Hi-Def DVD files once they are in my computer?

you'll need a video editing & dvd authoring suite that supports hi-def...i'm on mac, but maybe one of the pc heads will know a good prog for ya

once you find the best way, for you, to get the hi def files into your pc, at best you'll be archiving those recordings you believe are worth holding on to. In some cases, you will be able to archive the video file on DVD, but there is at this point no way to produce hi-def DVD's playable on DVD players. I'm sure the technology will not be far behind .

I know Final Cut Pro HD can supposedly produce HD DVD's, but I'm unfamiliar with the capabilities of the software.

Even if it is capable, the discs wouldn't play back in HD on any standalone unit.

At this point you can only burn the files as Data, unless you have a HD-DVD recorder from Japan.

there are numerous ways to get a HD authored show burnt to disc that will play in a standalone...and on top of that, HD burning is just around the corner for the public...i like to see people like Scott plannin ahead...

a hi-def player...not on the market in the states but available in other markets...theres also the hd conversion dvd players available now, but from what i hear they're pretty meh at this point

of course, all this is less about "now" and more about planning ahead for the [near?] future

Interesting, do you have a link to a model being released? My understanding is that Toshiba delayed their release of their first HD-DVD unit last month and it hasn't hit the Japanese markets yet. Likewise, Sanyo still hasn't delivered.

Not sure what you mean by HD conversion, but it is fairly common to have units that upsample SD to 720p or 1080i. But it's still an SD source.
