				Striped

Given lineage: FM>CDR(X)>EAC>FLAC Level[8] Real strange looking one. Extreme drop at 10 khz Co in FA. Strong frequency response below Co and above stripe paradise starts. Don't see obvious signs for lossyness. It is a short acoustic performance, small audience - just the kind of shows which are done for broadcasts often. Maybe it is a digital broadcast? yeah that's really strange. cuts off like a webcast, but I can't see any evidence of lossy encoding. as for all the stripes at the top, that's gotta be some kind of record looks like it was recorded to cassette maybe copied as well. I have an old tape deck that started to crap out on me from age, it gave three 'red stripes' but they were lower in frequency and not as wide. So it makes me think its bad/old equipment causing all those stripes. listen to a bit and see if you can hear any swish on the cymbals, maybe that's the best clue we're going to find.

Not sure where the 11 lines I see came from, though, but I do see what seems to potentially be the remnant of a 19 kHz pilot tone, or at least a filter to remove the pilot tone. I don't think it's necessarily lossy, but it might sound better if it were. EDIT: Actually, I seem to remember reading somewhere that AM radio tends to cut off around 10 kHz.

ahh, maybe its AM>cass then? its a theory. maybe tape a little off the am in your town and look at the FA/SA and see if it really cuts off at 10kHz. or I'll test it out the next time I'm taping from the radio.

Thanks for the replies. Put it into my car player. There is a constant (and rather loud) interference in the background. Think AM transmission is a good guess. A few times it switches to a sound which is a bit muffled for a few seconds. But apart from that it sounds pretty clear. Not like many old unofficial recordings which sound pretty bad in my car. I don't think it was recorded by the use of bad/old equipment. No members have liked this post. |
