I will admit to one fuckup just recently. I pulled out my older backup HDD, installed another one, made my external bunrer an internal unit, reformatted and blew out all the dust that had accumulated on the MB, RAM, etc. Got it home and threw on the "other" side of the case, since it had been off for like 12 months. Within 24 hours, it shit all over me. I promptly pulled that other side off and have had no trouble since.

Go figure...

i've been running constantly for almost 2 years with an occasional reboot every couple of weeks pushin 6 or 7 GB a day up and never had a problem with heat or shut downs, but like the earlier post i havent had one side on the puter the whole time and it stays nice and cool in there.....

This message has nothing to do with CPU overheat. NOTHING. Lately it most often has to do with spyware or hijacked executables, sometimes involving the Windows pagefile. However, in your case it may be the torrent software itself causing the Blue Screen of Death (which you don't get a chance to see because the default setting in XP is to autoreboot on Blue Screen). Make sure you have the latest edition of whatever torrent software you use.

I probably should get the new version of adaware, since it doesn't look like they've updated the reference file for 6.0 since the end of October and they probably never will. The 5.8.7 version of Shadow's Bit Torrent client I use is also old, and I could update that as well. So far though its looking like a lack of hard drive maintenence was causing my problems. Drive was horribly, horribly fragmented. Trying to recall when I last did a defrag or checked the hard drive for errors, and I can't. May not have done it since I bought the PC a year ago. Shame on me, but at least let me serve as an example to the rest of ya. I let my system go to shit for so long that it was getting to the point where I couldn't even run torrents.

Oh, and current PC temp is 87 degrees. Still think the temperature monitoring software is cool.

With a full and heavily fragmented hard drive, I would be inclined to suspect it was indeed Windows' pagefile. It probably could not read & write to it fast enough to keep up with all you had going on, causing a memory lock.

As the issue has been raised here, is there an easy way to disable this? A while back I was convinced I had some very sneaky virus or spyware rebooting my system, or some faulty mains lead or SOMETHING because these are the only causes I associated with such symptoms. I eventually discovered it was just a driver of some kind (wireless card I think) causing a conflict that would traditionally lead to a blue screen. Drove me insane and as such I now yearn to see the Blue Screen of Death once more!

If you're using XP, go to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery -> Settings -> Automatically Restart

After burning a bunch of shows to clear some space off my hard drive, AND doing a much needed defrag, the problem seems to be resolved. I had three torrent windows open for over 36 hours, which would have caused a reboot within an hour or so before. Thank all of you for all of your suggestions and help.

(plus, now I got that cool motherboard monitoring software!)
