Re: TTD not well.. download strategy to use (UPDATED!)

It seems that suddenly a lot of torrents have been turned to inactive.
Was this a deliberate decision to stabilize the site and to reduce the load?

I got the impression when deciding to never let torrents get inactive that this aspect is/was not crucial for the increasing problems with the site.

Anyway I hope this is not the end of TTD....

Effective ASAP due to my dire health issues, I'm stepping down from Primary Admin role. U2Lynne is still technically an Admin and she's essentially been running the site the past year. With some help from one or more tech-savvy folks they might get this site proper on some newer hardware and software. See my thread "TTD reimagined research and ideas".
So sorry to hear of your health issues. Our thoughts are with you for a speedy recovery.

U2Lynne and/or Moderators may be moving some to inactive. It doesn't matter as the torrents can't be seeded with the current software and hardware. Datahound and others tried to seed the site. It worked for a while but after a year it began crashing the tracker and site.

The tracker was not designed to handle so much traffic. Datahound's seeding alone generated about 20 announces per second on average, and with the rest of the members it maybe averaged double that. It possibly had peak demands of maybe 150 per second. I can't see a PHP tracker and spinning harddisks handling such a load.

With one of the compiled trackers (Ocelot), 150 per second is nothing. So whatever happens, TTD will either have to use a compiled tracker (and SSDs), or somehow reduce the load (fewer torrents and/or members). Dime chose to limit the number of seeded torrents to 30 per member (60 for VIP).

An alternative would be to use file hosting sites and not bittorrent. It would create new issues but seems to work better for other sites.

IMHO your suggestion of limiting the active torrents makes good sense. Lossless Legs discourages members continuing to seed torrents that are more than a couple of weeks old. Folks could always post reseed requests as needed.

I'd be sad to see TTD switch to file hosting sites - it is handy to be able to download a single track to sample the quality of a show, and this, plus the extra info available when a torrent fileset is posted, is very useful in checking against one's existing copies of a show to see if the "new" torrent represents a possible upgrade.

The website represents a vast trove of knowledge and discussion, and, even if closed to new members and/or limited as to torrents per member, it would be great if it could be preserved.

It would be a tragic loss to the community if TTD were to close completely.

Take care and hope the Mayo Clinic can be of help for you.

Alex
