Snail Mail CDR and DVDR Trading
Use this forum to co-ordinate with other snail mail (a slang term for postal service) traders. Post requests, trade offers, or tradelists for others to look at. Keep in mind that we only endorse 1:1 trades, and requests for 2:1 deals will be deleted. Also, nothing is for sale. Please do not offer to pay or offer to sell any recordings on this site. No one should pull a profit from trading.

Any links to lists that contain Officially Released Material will be deleted.

Vines

What is a vine?

A vine is a growing chain of people that receive and send shows using snail mail. The only cost to participants is the price of postage (and perhaps a new bubble mailer if needed). It all starts with a Vine Seeder.

The Seeder:

This is a generous person who wants to share a show with others without getting anything in return other than good karma. Anyone can seed a vine, just be sure to follow the format and rules for seeding below.

Seeding a Vine:

Please make the title of the thread to conform to this format: (band/artist) - (year-month-day) (venue information) (file format i.e. FLAC, SHN, PAL, NTSC) (i.e.- Matisyahu – 2006-03-21 The Orange Peel Asheville, NC (FLAC) OR Sonic Youth – 1988 thru 1991 – 9 shows/1 DVDr (FLAC) OR Various Artists – Bonnaroo 2005 – 30 shows/5 DVDr (FLAC and SHN))
Include the text file for the show in the thread.
Check your md5's or FLAC fingerprints before sending it out.

The Process:

The Seeder starts a thread announcing the vine they are going to seed. Please make the title of the thread to conform to this format: (band/artist) - (year-month-day) (venue information) (file format i.e. FLAC, SHN, PAL, NTSC). Inside they post the text file for the show and any other information people might want. (i.e. how many discs, format: shn, audio, FLAC). and the beginning of a list template. Please see the Vine Rules for a more detailed explanation of this.

Then people start to sign up for the vine. For instructions on how to sign up for a vine, see the : How to sign up properly for a vine FAQ Good practice is to email the person above you when you sign up. Keep in mind that you might get an email requesting the information again if the vine list is long. A lot of people don't/won't save emails for that long.

When you are next on the list the person above you will mail the discs to you. All you need to do is to make copies of the discs and then send the original discs to the next person on the list. Please do this in a timely fashion.

So what you get is a great show, and all you have to do is to re-address the bubble mailer and stamp it and send it on its way.

Communication is the key to vines running smoothly, Email, PM's, and posts in the thread will be really helpful to all involved.

Vine Rules:

A complete list of the Vine Rules can be found here. Please read over them carefully before signing up for any vines.

Breaking Vines / Vine Killers:

If you break a vine and do not pass it on you will be added to the Vine Killers List here and you will be blocked from participating in the vine section here. Communication is the best way to avoid this from happening. If you have any kind of problems with a vine or the person above you let me know and we will try to work it out. If you become a problem person you will be added to the banned list.

Trees

What is a Tree?

A Tree is a way to spread a show to a large group of people using a structured B&P method. This was very popular before downloading to spread audio shows on DAT tapes and cassettes. Now it is more commonly used to spread DVD’s. It consists of a Seeder, branches, and leafs.

What is a Branch?

A branch is someone willing to do a decent amount of B&P’s for the seeder. They will send out a B&P package for themselves to the seeder and when they receive it, they will ‘turn it around’. Meaning they will do several B&P’s for their assigned leafs. Anyone can sign up to be a branch, just keep in mind that this requires a timely commitment to turn around the show quickly. Please do not sign up to be a branch unless you are sure that you can do the B&P’s for your leafs quickly. It is a vital part of the tree. When a branch becomes broken a lot of time invested by the seeder is wasted and many leafs end up stranded without the show. There is no rule that you must branch to participate in a Tree. So if you are unsure about it. Just sign up to be a leaf. You can always offer up a few B&P’s right after you receive it to test the waters of doing several B&P’s at once and get on as a branch on a later tree if you find you have the time.

What is a Leaf?

A leaf is someone who wants the show but perhaps does not have the time to ‘turn around’ many B&P’s after. They send out a B&P to their assigned branch for themselves. Many times during the branch requests there will be more than enough branches to run the tree and commonly the seeder will put you down as a leaf in they do not need you as a branch. Once again if this happens you can always offer up a few B&P’s after you receive the show.

The Process:

Someone will seed and set up a tree. They will usually post in the Tree forum a request for ‘branches’ first, and then later have sign ups for leafs. After this is all done they will post the tree structure and the tree will begin to ‘grow’ The seeder will contact the branches and give them B&P instructions. The branches will contact the leafs and give them B&P instructions. Seeders will vary on how they do this. When I seed I usually will get the show to branches before posting the structure. I have also branched on a tree before where the structure is posted before I had been notified to send my package. Either way will work, but if you decide on seeding a tree I highly recommend waiting to post the structure until the branches have the show in hands. This streamlines the process and eliminates the barrage of emails about it taking too long
side note: do not send multiple emails to the seeder or your branch, once the structure has been posted. Let the branch contact you. If you do not hear from them for a week or 2, maybe reply in the tree thread that you haven’t heard from your branch

And that is a tree.

Loops

What is a Loop?

A loop is a small chain of traders. The Person who starts the loop will send a predetermined amount of shows to the next person. They will make copies of the originals and then send the originals along with the addition of a predetermined amount of shows to the next person who will repeat the process. There are several variations of Loops from genre, artist, file type, once arounds, long term loops, and others. This and the amount of shows are determined by the person who starts the loops. These are larger commitments than trades, vines, or B&P’s. The postage can often cost ten dollars or more and the time required to ‘turn around’ a loop can be considerable. I have been involved with loops that would get as large as 40-50 CD’s. That takes a lot of time. So be sure when you start a loop you consider the variations carefully and can commit to what you are starting and when you sign up for a loop you are willing to do your part in a timely fashion. warning: These examples make this process look harder than it really is. Loops are easy, fun, and addicting

Once Around Loops:

These are Loops where the participation required is the least. Basically this type of Loop will start with one person and then go through the loop once accumulating shows and then once again to remove shows. Here is an example of a once around loop based on a 5 person Loop with 3 shows.

Starter is Person 1.
Person 1 will add 3 shows and send to Person 2.
Person 2 will copy all shows and add 3 shows and send to person 3.
Person 3 will copy all shows and add 3 shows and send to person 4.
Person 4 will copy all shows and add 3 shows and send to person 5.
Here is where it changes a bit.
Person 5 will copy all shows and remove Person 1’s shows and add 3 shows and send to Person 1.
Person 1 will copy all shows and remove Person 2’s shows and send to Person 2.
Person 2 will copy all shows and remove Person 3’s shows and send to Person 3.
Person 3 will copy all shows and remove person 4’s shows and send to Person 4.
Person 4 will then have only Person 5’s shows and this is where the Loop Ends.

All in All this Loop will have passed around 15 shows to all people.

Long Term Loops:

These are Loops that will circulate through the group a predetermined number of times. Here is an example of a long term loop based on 4 members adding 3 shows at a time and running through the loop 3 times.
Starter is Person 1.
Person 1 will add 3 shows and send to Person 2.
Person 2 will copy all shows and add 3 shows and send to person 3.
Person 3 will copy all shows and add 3 shows and send to person 4.
Person 4 will copy all shows and remove Person 1’s shows and add 3 shows and send to Person 1.

Person 1 will copy all shows and remove Person 2’s shows and add 3 new shows (set b) and send to send to Person 2.
Person 2 will copy all shows and remove Person 3’s shows and add 3 new shows (set b) and send to send to Person 3.
Person 3 will copy all shows and remove Person 4’s shows and add 3 new shows (set b) and send to send to Person 4.
Person 4 will copy all shows and remove Person 1’s (set b) shows and add 3 new shows (set b) and send to send to Person 1.

Person 1 will copy all shows and remove Person 2’s (set b) shows and add 3 new shows (set c) and send to send to Person 2.
Person 2 will copy all shows and remove Person 3’s (set b) shows and add 3 new shows (set c) and send to send to Person 3.
Person 3 will copy all shows and remove Person 4’s (set b) shows and add 3 new shows (set c) and send to send to Person 4.
Person 4 will copy all shows and remove Person 1’s (set c) shows and add 3 new shows (set c) and send to send to Person 1.

Person 1 will copy all shows and remove Person 2’s (set c) shows and send to Person 2.
Person 2 will copy all shows and remove Person 3’s (set c) shows and send to Person 3.
Person 3 will copy all shows and remove person 4’s (set c) shows and send to Person 4.
Person 4 will copy all shows and remove Person 1’s (set c) shows and this is where the Loop Ends.

By this time this loop will have passed around 36 shows to all people.

Other Variations

I have seen many different themed Loops. FLAC Loops, Audio Only Loops, Loops with shows from just one artist, Loops with shows from only male/female artists, Loops by genre, Loops by requests from person below you.
