Not really a newbie I was around in the stg days then got out of trading for a while...anyways I'm back into it again and need a refresher. I got a set from someone that was encoded to ape :( I hate this format so I want to convert to wav then to flac. Here was my method but it didnt work out well...convert ape>wav using dbpoweramp then convert wav>flac using flac frontend. Well I then compared all 3 files md5check sum and heres what I got

ea87368b3923e7a9a018c763590695f9 *01.ape
dfcb75b40532b69ece2edb81f3331ed0 *01.wav
01df67ceb799c049f16cdd9e71ca5aff *01.flac

:hmm: whats the best way to go about doing this? I used to have a batch file to do this back in the day but I cant find it for the life of me if anyone can help me out with a batch file I'd appreciate it

I do a "bit compare" in foobar and the files come out "No differences in decoded data found"

I'm pretty sure the best thing for you to do is go directly from APE to FLAC (cutting out the WAV step), using foobar 2000. Look in this forum for Five's tutorial on how to setup the conversion process.

Here is the thread for SHN > FLAC conversion, all you have to do is change SHN to APE in the preferences setups.

Nothing weird with the different md5 sums you got. Normal md5 check only compares how the files "look" from the outside. The three files look totally different despite having the exact same music in them, hence the different sums.

You're probably mixing this up with md5 sums created by Shntool. That goes beyond the looks and checks just the uncompressed audio part of the files. It ignores the compression used, tags and all that. Hence, you get identical sums for APE, WAV, SHN, FLAC etc files that have the exact same music in them.

If you use foobar2000 you can use the 'Bit-compare tracks' to check that everything's ok.

Personally I use 'Multi frontend' for converting between formats. All you need is the binaries for your 'from' and 'to' formats (e.g. flac.exe and shorten.exe) and THIS (http://members.home.nl/w.speek/multi.htm) little program. Be sure to get that fixed mac.exe from the bottom of the page though if you use APE files.
