so, i dl'ed a zep show from usenet, and i have a conundrum. the md5 file fails on like 1/2 of the tracks. the par files, and indeed the flac files check out. which do i go with?

i listened to a few of the tracks that "failed", and there are no digital artifacts, but i know that doesn't always mean anything. i guess the poster could have started with bad files, but one would hope people aren't that stupid. thoughts?

Did the post have any *.par files with it (kinda normal nowadays with most usenet posts). Try loading the par check file and see if it finds anything wrong with the downloaded files.

Also, my memory might be confused here as it's been a couple years since it was floating around, but I seem to remember some years back that there was a "bad" version of one brand of software that either created/checked either the md5's or par files. Too far back in the past. You might want to try a different program to check the md5's as it might have related to them.

And of course, you can also monitor the group you got the files and see if anyone else complains. What show is it?

...actually now that I think about it I think the bad program was for par2 files....check anyways with a different md5 checker.

lol, ok, i will try a different md5 checker, all i normally use is mkw. the par files check out, as do the flac files.

doesnt anyone actually read posts anymore? :D

MKWact has trouble with any comments in the md5 (like the ones md5summer adds). try TLH as aar.oner suggests...

Crazy question--do the filenames even match the filenames in the md5 file? If they don't, there's your problem right there. Of course, for all we know, the original seeder could have altered some tags on the FLAC files and didn't know he needed to create new wholefile md5s.

This is of course presuming that you still have problems after checking the files with TLH.

so, i ran tlh, and it verified the ffp, but the md5 still had the same files fail. im so confused!?! it is possible he messed around with the tags, i havent looked yet.

also, this lil tlh program is pretty nifty. almost takes all of the fun out of lossless. :(

make a new md5 of the file set and compare both in Notepad or other text editor...are the sums different for the failed files, or did the filename get changed maybe?

also, have you tried restarting the torrent and letting it recheck the files, maybe a few pieces failed and need to be re-downloaded

He mentioned he got the show from usenet, and that's pretty much just like downloading a series of files. Plus he checked them with parity as ok. Best thing I can recommend is posting in the group and asking if anyone else has a problem with the files.

trustthex, what show is it and did you get it from abslz? I can test download a couple tracks if you want. Heck, if it's one of the recycled ones I might already have it from back the first time it was posted.

run "test mode" in tlh on the FLAC files. if they test okay then they are fine, regardless of the confusion about the md5.

the files test ok in tlh, so im just going to disregard the md5 i guess. i dont really intend on sharing the show, just burning it, but i was curious of integrity.

thanks.

trustthex, I downloaded this show way back in Sep 2003 in SHN format. I looked at the file names from then and now and they're different so I'll guess someone reripped this from discs and didn't do a SHN>FLAC conversion from the ones posted back then.

I just downloaded tracks 102, 103, 202, 203, and 402. They all pass the parity (par2) check and they all pass md5 verification through MKWact. Do these tracks pass for you as well? Let me know a specific track or two that don't pass for you and I'll grab them to test.
You could have a problem with your system that you need to be looking into if you're showing bad results and I'm not. You've got an easy test with me trying the same thing (I don't mind downloading a couple tracks) so take advantage of it.
Get back to me when you can.
