View Full Version : Is there an explicit ratio policy here?

So, I don't need to. Nobody needs too. And how/why the system is still working and surviving? Because some people is paying the bill, and not exactly because I/We love to do it. We have no option if we want some gigs.
And that's why The Genesis-Movement [ http://torrent.genesis-movement.org/ ] has the best SRE. The first 24 hours are for the best ratios. After that, you just stay if you want to or need. What I like, specially, is that I don't need to share my bandwidth with leechers.

People with nice ratios can share and so, after that, the leechers can TRY to get the gigs (and I wonder how, if they just don't like to share... but that's their problem, not mine). That's my suggestion.

Thanks again,

gun.1. bills need to be paid no matter what.
sharing out doesnt pay the rent.

2. thats completely childish. :lol sorry, Im sure how else to phrase it.

I'd rephrase the question here as:

Is there an interest for a ratio post policy and anti-aliasing mechanism here?

The ratio post would sound stupid, but at least could be a way to lessen the anonimity :wtf:no.

I don't understand what a ratio post policy or an anti-aliasing mechanism are so I guess I have no interest.

I can understand the pro-ratio peoples argument/concern, that if people don't give back, there will eventually be nothing left.

However, I don't think it applies necessarily to torrents. Yes it's a bit irksome to torrent a file, watch 500 people download it, but none re-seeding. But then, some years ago, we relied on ftp, where people NEVER shared back - you simply upload your file and leave it be. Whoever downloads it, downloads and goes away. The means of transportation has changed slightly, the nature of people has not. If people want to share, they will. If they don't, they won't. Why get your panties in a wad over it?

Ratios just serve to restrict and discourage sharing, they do not promote it.

Just a small point to make, but this site is now over three years old and we've never had a share ratio policy and shows seem to be sticking around pretty long (usually). Sure, we have some users who hit and run, but I also know we have some users who go above and beyond to share as much as possible.

Not entirely true.

I remember some ftp sites that only allowed you to download if you also uploaded shows to the server. The "share ratio" was something like, you had to upload at least one show for every five you download.

Seeders of fresh content should get double upload credit. The original seeder is like the chef, and the people who hang on the torrent are like waiters. So chefs with low ratios should get free drinks and valet parking.

for every 1 MB you upload, you'll get full credit on your upload number, with ZERO added to your download number - provided you are only uploading at the time. ;)

Do I look like I have "STUPID" written on my forehead?

Seriously though, people who seed nothing should not taunt others who give generously in other ways - just because we are "ratio challenged". We're kind of like special ed. kids, with special needs. So won't you give? Together, we can make a difference. (Fade in "We Are The World....)

You know actually James, my ratio has remaned at .26 for a full year, so I have really kept a 1.0 ratio here due to my seeding of video. So why don't you just throw me a bone and bump me up to 1.0 - I no longer am taunted, and no longer defend myself. Just keep on seeding nice original content. Sounds like a win-win to me. How about you?

sounds great to me... maybe we should do a YES/NO poll, though... we usually like to discuss things here at TTD before taking any action. It should be understood, going in, that this would be a one-time thing, for you only and would likely not ever happen again for anyone else.

In good faith, I have upped your ratio from 0.26 to 0.261 (though the site only displays two decimal points of the figures).

You know, I wouldn't worry about it. The reason we have the TTD Trader tag is to show when people are sharing on this site in other ways beside ratio. I know that I have never been crazy about ratio enforcement simply because in order for a site like this to survive, you need more than just people keeping a good ratio. You need the tapers, the authors, the traders, the uploaders, the seeders, and even the leechers. It's a whole cycle, it isn't all just about ratio.

Keep on sharing, Bill. I think you do a good job of it and I think it is very much appreciated.

I'm not fucked at all. There are no ratio standards anyway. I just don't enjoy schmucks who don't contribute even one item of content dissing my lame ass ratio. I still have over 700 hrs of very cool video to share, as well a ton of money to donate here. So all is well. Don't donate to my ratio, but don't expect me to stop donating what I have very generously! This place is great...

I started off here with a huge hole as I joined in order to get the Beatles' A/B Road.

I was in something like 15gig of debt 6 weeks or so ago, but Frank Sinatra has put me back on track.

It really isn't that hugely hard even if you get yourself into a bit of a jam. You just have to actually devote yourself to doing it and not just whinge about not being able to do it, as many often do.

There is a part for them to play!

The post whores and trolls are there to amuse us at work, and those who bullshit on lineage either give us stuff we otherwise wouldn't see, or they emphasise just how important it really is to get it right by showing us what it sounds like to get it wrong.

Everyone has their place in the cycle of life. Now we can all hold hands, and no giggling at the back there.

vlad, if your ratio has stayed at .26 for the last year, that means that you have kept a .26 on all your torrents for the last year. If you were sharing at 1.0 for the last year, your ratio would be going up, not staying the same.

Wouldn't it mean he's been sharing at exactly 1:1? That is, his downloaded amount & his uploaded amount have remained exactly proportional?

uploaded / downloaded = ratio?

In order for his ratio to rise, wouldn't he actually have to seed beyond a 1.0 ratio for a particular torrent, with the excess beyond 1.0 increasing his ratio? Of course, provided he wasn't downloading to counteract the increase.

No.

26/100 (starting ratio) + 30/100 (subsequent seeding) = .28 ratio. That is, if you seed at a ratio higher than your current ratio, your ratio will rise.

Yes, he only needs to upload 162 DVD's at 4.5 gig per DVD to catch up. Or, more likely, he'll upload more than just the 4.5 gig per DVD so the 162 is an absolute maximum.

Hell, I've uploaded 8 gig on just some of my puny aud shows so I know it's very possible.

Help what? There are no ratio standards here. I seed to share the good things I have, not to increase my ratio. I don't have a problem with my ratio - I have a problem with people who have a problem with my ratio and yet, have never seeded a single torrent to enrich the library of content here.
The beauty of this site is how so many people with different tastes in music share, and offer so much variety. When newcomers visit they think "Wow, look at all the great things that are here." not "Wow look at all the great ratios!". :icon_hug:
