these are a few that i'm trying to determine more about...its all DJ recordings, so the wav forms are going to be different than a traditional band...any opinons on possible source or any lossiness...cheers!

Show 1 looks iffy (a lorra holes), show 2 looks like kosher FM though maybe a little clean between the 15 KHz ceiling and the pilot tone, show 3 also looks iffy. Could you possibly send some snippets ?
looks to me like whatever you are using to do the spectrum analysis is wortless

IMO show 1 and 2 look like mp3 sourced, show 3 doesn't look like mp3, but maybe MD sourced.

that dj shadow show has a step of lossy in it somewhere... not mp3 but perhaps minidisc. same goes for the quannum collective show but that one could possibly be mp3. it was torrented on dime a while back. the squarepusher is minidisc. I managed to track down the original (or atleast so im told) info file:
Squarepusher a/k/a Tom Jenkinson
Bowery Ballroom, NYC

Audience recording
Sony MD > ?don't remember what I used to get it on disc > .wav > dbPoweramp > .flac
I think this is an excellent recording - the show is very clear with a minimum of crowd noise. I was in the upper balcony on the left side. A lingering security guard caused me to have to hide my mic for a portion of the recording, but that results in only a slight muffling. The show was loud enough so that I could use a nice low recording level and the result is a VERY clean and listenable recording. I have edited this a bit, so it's much shorter than the actual show. If this goes well, I'll try to seed an entire show from last May. These '03 shows formed a lot of the material that ended up on 'Ultravisitor'.
Selist is a bit difficult because there's so much improv. 'Ultravisitor' is on there and the last track is 'Come on My Selector' (with a little Stanley Clark thrown in). Any help with the other tracks would be apreciated.
Enjoy!

I'd like to call mp3 on the DJ Shadown and Quannum Collective shows. The spectrum exhibits typical mp3 block durations rather than the 12ms long blocks that are so typical of MD, and both have a rather messed-up side channel, which is also typical of some mp3 encoders. (Disclaimer: I am not aware to which extent lower quality MD encoding introduces such issues, if even)
The Squarepusher show is MD indeed.

what do you mean by a side channel? I agree that the quannum collective is probably mp3. the dj shadow has quite a bit of noise above 16k though. you cant really see it in aaron's pics but if you open up the 10 sec wav that was hosted in a spectral analyzer of your choice you should be able to see what im talking about. however, I see what you mean about the block size being a bit short.... I dont know. somewhere there was a broad spectrum of noise introduced so maybe this is mp3>cassette. :hmm:

werd ssamadhi, a bit more re: side channel? [i'm still learning]
i mentioned this to ffooky in PM, but alot of DJ related stuff i've found has been webcast captures [of varying quality]...don't know if this is a possibility on the Shadow or Quannum shows, but figured i'd throw it out there.
again thanks for the time and opinions everyone...

werd ssamadhi, a bit more re: side channel?
Basically the difference of the two stereo channels. You can store stereo audio in the classical L-R (left-right) representation or in M-S (mid-side). [M = (L+R) / 2, S = (L-R) / 2]
Lossy encoders often introduce strong artifacts in the side channel, intentionally or not, since it's not something that's usually directly related to perceived audio quality (unless surround is being faked based on side channel information, for example by Pro Logic decoding)
You can listen to the side channel for example by using Audition's channel mixer (L-R to Mid-Side preset, or alternatively Vocal Cut)
