I have a show (Billy Corgan - 2005-06-01) which is from dubious origins, the only known source for this show is a hi8 recording, and I have no idea what a cam audio FA would look like....this is what im getting in spectral view:

wow that is weird.... straight cutoff with just a few perfectly square blocks showing up every second.

I'd venture to say that no analog or lossless digital encoding (wav or otherwise) could create these blocks. so what I'm saying is I believe with certainty that this is lossy.

so the next vital question is when did it happen? did the camera record it lossy? or was it mauled during its tortuous journey to your collection?

Does anybody know if a hi8 cam exists which records lossy audio? What encoding would that be? If it was recorded lossy at the source imo it is tradeable.

Don't count on anything in spectral view meaning anything. I don't think any of that is a sure sign either way. The frequency loss.. harder to say. I would expect mp3 to drop earlier than that but you never know. The source of the recording could give some clues (credible person?)

what about a Hi-MD or 32k DAT?

problem solved: burned it to cdr and it had gaps. must have been converted to flac from mp3
