One of the best introduction to newsgroups tutorials I've ever read.

I personally like xnews as a newsreader but you probably want a reader that is still actively being supported and also supports .nzb files.

Re: Usenet newsgroups?

I used to use usenet all the time... like 10 years ago.. remember when you could still find actual discussion threads on usenet? I had a priate copy of Agent (not Free Agent - the real deal) and thought I was the shit... I was like wow, there's a lot of really strange porn in some of these groups...

Re: Usenet newsgroups?

If you want to see what the usegroups are like, you can look at what google has: http://groups.google.com/ Put in an interest, like "music" and the first group that comes up is "rec.music.beatles" http://groups.google.com/group/rec.m...pics?lnk=gschg Boy, just look at the spam! But, here's a legit thread http://groups.google.com/group/rec.m...4c4b1729f00423 I think that now that I'm used to forums, I prefer them over newsgroups. (I won't touch the download aspect of newsgroups. )

You still can find discussions outside of the binaries groups. But with the proliferation of web boards, google and wiki, no one wants to wait for answers. 10 years ago all my beer discussions were thru usenet. Now I just come here. And yes there is some weird pr0n out there.

There are still a lot of groups that are moderated and kept spam free though. I've downloaded a shitload of good stuff from said groups this year. And it's usually quicker than P2P.

I also grab some good stuff from time to time, Euro-Festival broacasts in HD are always nice.

One of the few reasons I wish I lived in Europe. I'm listening to an old XM broadcast interview with Mitch Hedberg.

Re: Usenet newsgroups?

I'm using usenet for a year, and believe me, i cannot stop downloading stuff from there. I consider myself still a newbie. I don't understand a lot of things, but that don't stopped me to enjoy it...it's really fantastic. I hope one day all traders here at the Den gives usenet a chance.

IMO the best features usenet have are:

* High speed downloadings. Normally on a torrent, i download a 4Gb DVD in around 6-10hours! ...on usenet just 90min aprox.

* Dedicated servers. Instead depend of other peoples while downloading. here one DL from a server, so it's faster and continuous. Practically never the DL is interrupted.

A nice start, i recommend usenext.com service. They have a 15 day trial or 3Gb limit. Usenext have a little propietary newsreader that's very easy to use. It's like an internet explorer for usenet.

Here's a little pic of how usenext explorer looks. I have open the lossless.bootlegs group.

Enjoy downloading!!!
