so I guess it would only take about 5 seconds to dl a dvd...

Re: Need a faster internet??

The prices in Hong Kong are insanely cheap.

$16 USD for 10mb up/down? Come on. Free market my ass. We have nowhere near a free market here in the US.

Re: Need a faster internet??

The only thing these kinds of conenctions are good for is uploading, as 40% or so of every user on a torrent is firewalled and no major servers upload faster than about 400 k/Bs anyway.

Want to share your entire library in a week? Move to Hong Kong.

Bytes = bits / 8.125

896 kbps = 110 kilobytes

While free market competition is a large factor. Realize also that in the Asian countries, heavy governmental involvement played a role in the broadband roleout. In Japan that included debt guarantees, tax breaks and even subsidies in some cases. It was a concerted Governmental policy that ended up overhauling their system and encouraging the free market, not a true free-market in the supply-demand sense that led to cheaper pricing. I don't know the case in Hong Kong.

There was quite a good article in Foreign Affairs this summer about the difference between Japanese broadband and US broadband.

The price quoted in that article is an average of $22 for 26mbps connections.

Re: Need a faster internet??

It would be nice to know just 1 person from Hong Kong to mail them a bunch of DVDs and let them seed them....wow that would really speed up things over here on TTD. (anybody here from Hong Kong? If so, I would be happy to mail you some dvds if you want to seed some stuff for me )

The dl & ul speeds, are they bits or bytes, coz the abbreviation for both appears to be kbps, maybe with a different letter in capital.

I have (I think) a 256kbps modem, (at most a 512kbps) which, when I haven't been slowed to 64kbps because I've gone over my monthly limit (& I have a very stingy isp - but had no choice where I live when I signed up) can dl at rates, if the torrent is flying, at well over a 100kbps. When I get slowed, the most it can do is 8kbps.

My isp is tellling me that the dls are bytes & the modem spped is described in bits, therefore 8=64. That should mean that the highest rate I could dl would be 32 (or 64 if my modem is 512) when at full speed. This is clearly not the case.

Can anyone explain this to me & hopefully give me some technobabble to talk back to my isp?

Re: Need a faster internet??

256 kilobits per second = about 31.5 kilobytes per second.

ISP's will always quote you the higher speed to make it seem faster. Almost any speed display will show you as bytes.

256 kb = 31.5 kB

What you see in your bittorrent client is kilobytes. kB.

The modem isn't speed rated, your circuit is where the limit is.

One thing to note here is that for some users, your allowable upload speed is different (lower) than your allowable download speed. I can upload at speeds of 52 kbps, but can download at over 300 kbps (in bytes, not bits, as Colin talks about above).

Thanks fot the replies.

But could you explain what you mean by this?

So why can I dl at much higher speed than 31.5kilobits/sec when I'm not slowed, but can't go anymore above 8 when I'm slowed?

And can I limit my dl speed myself?
