mac G4s and sound cards

I've started to acquire tapes from trades and would like to rip them to digital files. Assuming I have a decent tape deck, does the "audio in" port of a Mac G4/G5 provide enough dynamic range or response (if those are the best measures of quality), or is it better to purchase a pc sound card for this purpose (if that is possible)?

a soundcard or an A/D converter...yer g4 has a 1/8" stereo mini input, RCA or optical would of course be better.

M-Audio's Audiophile 2496...a great "inexpensive" card
