Question conversions, probably a dumb question

so, ive been getting a lot of avi. files, which are fine, but when it comes to creating them to a dvd, i lack the knowledge. I know this has probably been answered a thousand times, and probably really easy. Ive tried nero, roxio, and so weird trial stuff, none of which do the job. If anyone could help me or point me in the right direction. Ive looked all over technobabble for this topic. Maybe its out there, does anyone know what to do?????
Thanks alot for any much needed help.
