Greenhorn Using (Hold Your Laughter!) Dial-Up To Download....

Is there anyone here in the same sinking "boat".....better yet, clinging to the same piece of "driftwood" as I that's attempting to download using dial-up? (I'm in an area where there's no cable or DSL!!) I've been able to snag a few torrents (with patience) and the time it has taken (ex: 601MB took about 40 hours!!!-Zeppelin 12-10-07) was well worth it, but for comparison, and additional motivation to go wireless, what sort of time should various size torrents take? I can't continue this way!!

LWS66, I'm sure that some kind souls would do b&p's with you for the recordings you want. As for your question - when I hop on a bt that has 20+ seeders w/o firewalls, that 601 mb torrent would complete within 30-45 minutes w/cable. Download speeds peak out at approx. 350kb/sec. under ideal conditions.

lol - I have a meagre 2mb service which can dld max 225kBps, but often end up on torrents that take days to dld, as the seeders have no bandwidth to spare. Don't worry about it - just accept it and be patient. Snail-mail trading and vines are great ways of expanding your collection.

I remember downloading slackware v1 some years ago, on dialup..Took 2 weeks, between the continual dropped carriers/resumes.

Persistence will pay off!
As mentioned...hit the B&P and Vine Forums.
I had dial-up for almost 2 years and still managed to add quite a bit to my collection. My ratio wasn't the greatest for a while, but if you just 'set it and forget it', treat folks kindly and stay on top of all your trades you should be fine.

i was on dial up for years and never even tried d/ling torrents...it took way too long and my connection was too spotty...i relied on snail mail trades, vines, & loops to get shows, all of which we have forums for here

Re: Greenhorn Using (Hold Your Laughter!) Dial-Up To Download....

I am new to all this, hence the "Greenhorn" reference. I don't have anything to trade....let alone offer, and never even considered the other options. Will have to look into those. Much to learn!

LWS, for b&p's, you don't need to offer anything in exchange. you send blank cdr's to someone, postage paid by you both ways, they receive the blanks & cut whatever you want onto them then mail 'em back to you.

do a search for blank & postage & i'm sure a lot of sites with good info will pop up.
