FLAC auto tagger?

There are a dozen apps out there that will take an MP3 file and tag it based on the file name(s). You can set it to 'auto detect' based on a set of variables in a string and it'll tag a whole folder of MP3s.

Someone recommend a utility like that that will write FLAC tags?

We move stuff OUT of the Technobabble forum?

I figure you whores, er, proliferate posters, know where you want to post and so if you post a Techno question in The Lounge, you really don't want responses from Techno users, but from other Lounge posters.

Re: FLAC auto tagger?

well Lynne, since you are reading this thread...

a seemingly unrelated question (but it is):

What sort of characters, in file names, have been found to cause problems in torrents for either Mac or Win users? Not talking about the .torrent file name, but the names of the actual files in the torrent?

for example:
1969.Jan.06 - D1-03 - Oh! Darling - 6.01 (1' 38'').flac

That's not a quote mark - it is a double apostrophe.

Or do they even matter? Seems like I have something in the back of my head about file names, that are legal in Windows, causing a problem with torrents anyway - or was that just the .torrent file name itself?

I looked at the FAQ, but I didn't see this specific question.

Re: FLAC auto tagger?

Yes, they matter, and no, for some reason we have never covered them in the FAQ. They only seem to matter to PC users, not Mac users. All the letters of the alphabet and all numbers are fine. Dashes and underscores (- _ ) are fine. Slashes ( / ) are fine. I avoid all others. I *think* ampersands ( & ) may be fine. I'm a Mac user, so to be honest, I haven't paid a whole lot of attention. But, I name my torrents as band yyyy-mm-dd. I don't put in bootleg titles or any of that stuff. I try to keep it simple.

Re: FLAC auto tagger?

or just move this to the technobabble forum

it's not so much the name of the torrent or the name of the .torrent file, more like that names of the files IN the torrent.. do they even matter?

seems like something made the hash hang up.. but I don't remember.

slashes are illegal windows chars, so that wouldn't ever make it to a hash.. the OS won't take the filename.

I guess it's the apostrophes I'm wondering about.

I am pretty sure that apostrophes cause problems for PC users. And, it could be that slashes do also (or at least backwards slashes since they are used to 'escape' things in coding).

Here's my thought on the question of apostrophes.

I don't like to see apostrophes (a.k.a. single quotation marks) in filenames because I use the command line on a regular basis, and to cope with filenames with spaces in them, you surround the file name (or folder name) with single quotes. If there's a apostrophe already in the file name, it'll think the file name ends there and the operation won't proceed because a file or folder with the truncated name doesn't exist.

Granted, there is a workaround for this, but it is very annoying to have to put a \ before every space, apostrophe, parenthesis, or other 'invalid' characters.

(P.S. Listen to skip--foobar should do what you were wanting to do. And if any Linux users are reading this, Ex Falso is a fantastic GUI for tagging.)

Re: FLAC auto tagger?

i'm with Lynne, keep it simple and stick to dashes and underscores only...and i can't stand it when the dates not in the yyyy-mm-dd format...

i'm guessing its the exclamation mark that was making it hang, but could also be the apostrophes...and not to be an ass, but that naming format seems unnecessary and confusing...especially with no band name in it...but everyone has their own preferences i guess i just stick with the boring old band_yyyy-mm-dd_d1t01 [without the underscores of course]
