Does Downloading one song hurt your ratio?

If I see a show I'm interested in, but no samples, I sometimes DL one song to see how it sounds. If there is a 700mb concert, I download one song (25mb), in my 'size' it shows 700mb, but I only DL a fraction of that. After seeding the one track, my ratio is very low. It looks like if I download only 25mb, I get 'charged' as if I downloaded 700mb. If I seed the 25mb long enough to pay back, it penalizes me because I 'only' seeded 25mb of the '700'.
Is this true? Why does it act like it if not?

Chris.

Re: Does Downloading one song hurt your ratio?

The tracker only 'charges' you for the information that your bittorrent client says you downloaded. If you really think you are getting charged for the whole thing, then try a different client and see if it still does that. Actually, you can look at the stats for the show and see what the tracker says you have downloaded and uploaded - that is the information that it gets from you.

(But, if you download 25mb and only seed back 25mb, then your ratio will go down. To keep your current ratio, you need to seed back 1.98x25mb or almost 50mb.)

How's that work? If I DL a 25mb file, or whatever size, and seed it until what I've DL has been UL from me, my ration would be 1.0, right?
Shouldn't it be 1 for 1 or is this some weird math I don't understand?

No weird science here. I guess that what Lynne meant to say is that happydog500 has a current ratio of 1.98, so in order to keep that ratio of 1.98 he has to seed 1.98x25mb (or almost 50 mb). If one has a ratio of 1.0 and one wants to maintain that ratio, it would be enough to seed the amount of data downloaded (in this example that would be 25mb).
