ffmpeg -i thenameofthefuckingfile.m4v -target dvd nameofconvertedfile.mpg

I'll leave you to figure out what the above means, but it will work.

Re: M4v

If it's like an mp4 I believe the latest Quicktime should play it, or maybe Windows Media Player. They both play mp4s, but WMP works better for me for those files.

It's not dos, dos is text based. You mean Windows. But just because it won't burn with itunes doesn't mean it's only for Windows.

Did you try googling "play m4v"? Asking someone where you got it from if they know?

(you need QuickTime 7 installed to play M4V files)

Get Quicktime 7. It should play them. Just do it.

That's if you don't care about Quicktime taking over after installed - but that can be delt with.

Re: M4v

Taking over what? Do you mean file associations? I've heard someone complain about QT but I've never had a problem.

Actually... here's their QT alternative... maybe that would work too.

I think unless you've got one of Cowon's mp3 players, you're probably fine just sticking with VLC. Not to mention I think the program he mentioned isn't free.

That being said, I could easily go for an iAudio X5 when I'm ready to move on from my Rio Karma. Supports FLAC, and they have support for Linux via USB (the Karma has to connect via ethernet if you're not a Windows user).

Re: M4v

I think she just wants to play a iPod type video file on her computer, not buy an mp3 player.

Also annajoy, you really should post this in technobabble. You'll generally get more informed responses there. Still, you should just get Quicktime 7. JSeriously. Do it now.

Yeah, that's probably what she's trying to do, which means that VideoLAN Client would probably work just fine if she doesn't want to use QuickTime. I'm just mentioning that there's no point in her snagging that (apparently) non-free program ozhawk mentioned.

It has a tendency to take over as your default media app when installation.
