rare reel to reels of john mclaughlin

Hi - I have about 4-6 hours of live John Mclaughlin and Shakti, One Truth and Trio of Doom on audio reel-to-reel tape.
I would be really pleased if you would be willing to accept the tapes, transfer them to CD or DVD and send me back the disks.
I would happily pay for all postage, but cant for the transfer.
I think this is a real win-win opportunity for both of us.

Contents on the 3 X reels are:

* Shakti: New Vic, London, 8/5/77
* Shakti Broadcast, May 1977, and TV interview 11/2/77
* One Truth Band, State Theatre, Sydney, 2/7/79
* Shakti, Montreux, July, 1976,
* Shakti, radio session
* One Truth Band, Elizabethan Theatre, 16/7/79
* Mahavishnu Orchestra - bootleg
* Trio of Doom (McLaughlin, Jaco, Tony Williams)
* One Truth Band, Montreux, 1979 (TV)

Please let me know if you are interested and willing to make this trade.

Thanks, Paul (Jerusalem)

I don't have a reel-to-reel deck, for the moment. Just want to wish you good luck in finding someone that can do good transfers of these.

I think it's about time, before they get any older.

paul, if they're regular 4-track stereo reels, i can help you as long as they're recorded at 3.75 ips or 7.5 ips. i don't have access to a half-track. fyi, i plug directly into the computer and do the transfers with Audacity...directly to wav files.

It should be possible to correct this in the digital domain afterwards, the speed difference should be linear. (Shouldn't it? Hmm...)

Re: rare reel to reels of john mclaughlin

Von, you're right about speed correction....it can be done after transfer to digital. I've never done it, tho'. That's why I hesitate to transfer tapes at other speeds than the ones my deck can handle.

If a tape is recorded at a slower speed, I would think you'd have to transfer it at twice the sampling rate in order to have a final product of 44.1 kHz which should include all of the detail of the original recording.

Please - someone correct me if I'm wrong. I do all transfers in real time to avoid losing any of the music.

John

That's correct. Alot of soundcards can record at 96KHz, so it shouldn't be a big problem. The speed reduction in software is very easy to accomplish.

Von, I just checked Audacity......it can handle 96kHz. Paul, my offer still stands.

Make sure your hardware can handle 96kHz aswell.

(I.e record something as 96kHz in Audacity.)

I don't want to rain on the parade, Paul, but leaving aside the mechanical issues of transferring reel-to-reel to digital, it's perhaps worth noting that many, if not all, of these, have been circulating in the community for some time. You state they are on 3 reels of tape, suggesting that another party has made a compilation for you. We have no indication of what the lineage is (I can't imagine you recorded direct to reel-to-reel in Montreux, Sydney and London ...), and I would suggest that there might be versions in circulation nearer the source. For instance;

* Shakti Broadcast, May 1977, and TV interview 11/2/77

If this is the BBC radio session, there's a pre-FM version around

* Shakti, Montreux, July, 1976,

This is on an official release - part of the Montreux box set

* Shakti, radio session

Definitely not the same as the BBC one mentioned above...?

* Mahavishnu Orchestra - bootleg

There's LOTS of MO boots out there - any further info?

* Trio of Doom (McLaughlin, Jaco, Tony Williams)

This has just been officially released

* One Truth Band, Montreux, 1979 (TV)

In general circulation as Montreux 1978, but now also on official release in the Montreux box set.

---

The other OTB 1979 shows are the only ones I can't pin down. The official ones can't be circulated here, so that limits the 'win' situation on this side. However, your prime driver appears to be to get copies of the reels since, I assume, you are unable to play them..?

I have the gear to do this, but I need more information before I commit, such as; recorded speed - 3.75 ips, 7.5 ips etc. Whether they are 2-track or 4-track tapes. If they're not 4-track at 3.75 or 7.5 ips, I'll be unable to play them too! Some indication as to where they came from, whether they all came from one source who compiled them from other sources, etc....

Regards, Graham
