freeware reliable program to create ISO files for dvds?

hey guys, long story short i have a new laptop, my desktop has a version of nero that came on a burner (which i cannot instal on my laptop, i think nero was put on the burner for a one time installment) i've wasted several dvds tonight trying to burn some dvds downloaded here because the 2 programs o create iso's i've tried have not worked or at least i did it incorrectly somehow.

for whatever reason i have zero problems when creating with nero and i eventually had to use an external HDD and brought the files from my laptop to my desktop to burn the discs.

so can anyone recomend a reliable program to create an iso that an idiot like me can't mess up?
