mp3 speed correction?

This may be a taboo discussion since it is about mp3's. A guy at work asked me a question concerning mp3's and I didn't know the answer. Apparently, he downloaded an mp3 and it played fine for the first few times. Then, the mp3 file somehow sped up. eg., the track is 3:33 sec in length. The track stayed the same length but the music now only lasts 2:00 and the end is padded with silence. It now sounds like Alvin & the Chipmunks. I was wondering what might have caused this to occur and how to fix?

Re: mp3 speed correction?

I've never heard of that happening. Sounds like a software flaw of some kind. Have him decode the thing to WAV and then see if it does the same thing. Though the topic is certainly taboo in these parts I have interested to see how it turns out.

Might try posting in the mp3 section of hydrogenaudio, as there are quite a few more knowledgible people over there:

Re: mp3 speed correction?

The file is damaged and probably unfixable.

Re: mp3 speed correction?

I told him not to even bother with mp3 but he doesn't understand. I'll try and convince him to deal in loseless only. He was wondering more about what would cause the file change? Possibly some malicious script hidden in the file?

Re: mp3 speed correction?

What's with all the MP3 haters? I'd never use MP3s for trading, but let's face it, until I can get a 400GB iPod compressed audio will always be a necessary evil.

Besides, most MP3s sound quite good if encoded properly (--alt-preset extreme at least, none of that 128k crap).
