I need some windows help

....I uninstalled Nero.......and now when I enter My computer, local disk (C). My music... a search result screen appears instead of the contents in My Music. Its driving me out of my mind!!! It will open if I hit open but I can't get at the files when I try to burn !! I'm figuring that this file is now associated with a different file type ? Does anyone have a clue what I should change in the registered file type menu to get back my setting? I tried restore system and default settings but no go ! I really hope one of you lil computer genius's can help me......I barely have any hair left on my head !! I have windows xp SP2 if that helps. Thanks in advance if you have any ideas

Re: I need some windows help

Hope i explain this right in my Dutch English.

If you try to play 'something' in Windows Media Player ? Or install Windows Media Player again ? Maybe the music files will change then ? When i installed a new WMP in Windows 98 (sorry ! )the music files usually changed too.....

Re: I need some windows help

First of all look and see if there's still a folder for Nero (Ahead) anywhere in your Programs folder. If so then manually delete what's left. Sometimes programs don't get rid of everything when they uninstall. If there was anything for you to get rid of see if that did it.

If not, try going to the pull down menu: tools > folder options
Then go to the File Types tab.

This lets you associate files/folders with different types so that may help. Nero probably made them associate a certain way but you should be able to change it back.
Go to the File Types tab, and then into advancced. For my File Folder the Actions listed are:
Enque in foobar2000
Play in foobar2000
Browse with ACDSee
find
Generate MD5 Signatures

See what yours says. Maybe it's telling them to open with search. IF so delete that action.

If you can get to the individual files, right click on them and check properties (at bottom of list). You can change the program that file is associated with there. You just need to change one file then it will set all of that type of file.

Hope this does it.

Re: I need some windows help

Have you done a "Clean" Uninstall, using all the Nero tools especially the registry cleaner ?
To get Nero to work right it has to have 100% of the program removed then rebooted then installed

Found this somewhere.....

Also, right click on your My Music folder and go to properties. Does it have 2 or 3 tabs? Mine has only 2, General and Sharing. But other folders have a third one, Customize. If it has that look in there and see what kind of folder it is. Not sre about this, but it can't hurt to have a little looksee...

Re: I need some windows help

Don't be scared it's simple. It's telling you to do the other thing I listed. The going to the Tools > Folder Options. All you do is go there and then it should be fixed. Simple simple. Now get rid of that other link you keep posting whatever that is!!!

Edit: Actually it says you then have to go to your registry... Here's the text since you're chicken! :P
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CAUSE
This problem occurs when you open the Edit File Type dialog box for the Drive or File Folder registered file types. For example, this problem occurs for folders if you complete the following procedure:

1.
Open the folder, and then click Folder Options on the Tools menu.

2.
Click File Folder in the Register file types list, and then click Advanced.

3.
After you perform this procedure, the None setting is removed from the value data for the Default string value in the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
NOTE: This problem occurs even if you do not create a new action, edit existing actions, or change the default action in the Edit File Type dialog box.

RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, edit the registry to set the value data for the Default string value in the registry keys that are described in the "Cause" section of this article to none:

1.
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

2.
Locate and then click the Default value under the following keys in the registry if this problem occurs with folders:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
If this problem occurs with drives:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell

3.
Click Modify on the Edit menu.

4.
Type none in the Value data box, and then click OK.

5.
Quit Registry Editor.
