Radiohead 2006-05-18 (Dime)

Got this show from dime http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-d...id=96823&hit=1

SA:

FA:

I was wondering about those black (blockiness) holes. I noted the ones in the 17 kHz region are mirrored. I was told earlier: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...09&postcount=6
this is due to upsampling, so is this one upsampled or didn't I understand right last time..

Lineage/info:
Minidisk Sony MZR700PC
Microphone Sony ECM-717 Elecret Condenser
Steinberg Clean! Plus

Can post sample, but I don't think that's needed.

I would like to look/listen to a sample if at all possible. it looks a little odd to me, too.

Re: Radiohead 2006-05-18 (Dime)

most md recordings I see around (including my older sony) looks like ATRAC3 Type R

as seen here:
http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...ead.php?t=8003

this one is believeably atrac3 (lp2) or perhpas earlier similar codec with an analog transfer using the Sony MZR700PC itself for playback. the "pc" at the end was an option that seemed to allow direct digital transfers but still uses the analog line in for transfers, thus the noise at the top (see the same link above).

if it was transcoded to mp3 or similar there would be pitch black at the top, so imo this is a tradeable md recording as advertised.

Yeah, looks like md lp2 (comparing with the analyses posted in that thread).

But makes me wonder if the other show:
http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...09&postcount=6
isn't also same lp2?

Re: Radiohead 2006-05-18 (Dime)

the cutoff on the other show is completely different so not lp2 imo, but yeah, it does look like it could be lp4.

ps lp4 is really really terrible, worse than many mp3s imo

You are right, I was focussed on the holes not on the cut-off. Thanks for the input once again!

I know there is somebody else who taped this gig (from the other thread), but with a dictaphone and she has no idea how to get it digitalised and neither do I.

So (next) question is dictaphone better than lp4 and is there any good site where I can read how to make a lossless (?) version from the recording?

Not sure which settings are used on the dictaphone but i can ask taper..

Re: Radiohead 2006-05-18 (Dime)

a lot of it depends on the mics used & taper's location, but I would guess that the dictaphone is probably better than lp4 (almost anything would probably be better!).

what did the dictaphone record to? is it a cassette?

Re: Radiohead 2006-05-18 (Dime)

out of the frying pan, into the fire

if its microcassette it could feasibly be better, but only if an external mic was used. microcassette also means it can only be mono, but while mono isn't preferable it can still be very listenable. a microcassette runs half the speed of a cassette, so it might be something like half the freqency response and double the noise. and chances are if the person is recording on a non-typical rig they are probably also using the built-in mic which is speech-quality and picks up motor noise. the mics the lp4 guy used are half-decent, worlds above a stock dictaphone mic.

in other words, the lp4 md recording is most likely the better of the two, unfortunately.

this is 2006 and it is a very famous band so imo there has to be another better source out there somewhere. shake down some uk radiohead tapers for a trade, there's probably guys online right now who taped it and haven't finished the transfer yet its only been about 2 weeks.
