Whether coming through the air, an ethernet line, a phone line, or in a piss pot, bits is bits. The bittorrent protocol makes it hard for bits to get flipped unnoticed, and md5/ffp checks can verify that they have not. As for viruses, the only way to get a virus via bittorrent is if the virus is in the content being torrented, which is unlikely although technically possible, so if concerned you could scan the content before opening any part of it.
