Linksys WRT54G v.5 help

Hello,

I've got a Linksys WRT54G v.5 wireless router running in my apartment in the adjacent room, and the internet connection tends to drop regularly about 5-6 times a day, requiring me to unplug and replug the power adapter. Once the router turns back on, it works again. The intervals of operation can range anywhere between 20 minutes and several hours, but inevitably, the wireless connection stays operational but there is no internet. I'm running a G wireless card in my computer and I've password protected the router, and all of that works, it's just that the internet signal disappears several times a day, and if I'm out, that means I can't plug it back in, which affects my seeding.

Any ideas?

-Alex

Does it only disconnect when you are running bittorrent?

Re: Linksys WRT54G v.5 help

If you do a google search for "WRT54G locking up" there are a number of hits that come up. (some related to torrenting actually)

Routers locking up from bittorrent are not unusual. I had a Netgear a couple years back that couldn't handle the traffic and got replaced. I think in the case of mine, the processor was just overwelmed, but I've heard of them suffering from heat build-up so you could always put a small fan next to it and see if that helps. (the simple fix try). You could also try to not torrent for a day or two at all (I know, it's rough) and see what happens. (simple fix try #2)

If you just bought this one, you might want to take it back. If you've had it for a while and it's worked until now...well,...anything you've done different recently?

Re: Linksys WRT54G v.5 help

It locks up even when I'm not running any torrents. Sadly, I can't take it back because I bought it a couple years back and hadn't actually used it much until now. I'm going to have Comcast come out and put another cable outlet in the room with the computer sometime soon so this should all get cleared up, even if the problem isn't solved. Thanks for the replies.

hold down the reset button on back and reset all defaults and then re setup and password the router an it should be fine.

Yeah, what he/she said. Forgot about simple fix try #3.

Not so simple fix try #4 could be installing the newest firmware on it. I didn't read too deep in the search links to see if that helped anyone.

Are you sure it's not your connection itself? I have the same router and it works flawlessly.

Re: Linksys WRT54G v.5 help

I recently installed the 3rd party firmware DD-WRT on my WRT54G v6 and so far it's working pretty good. I used this tutorial and if you can follow instructions to a T then it might be worth you checking it out. that is if you are comfortable doing this sort of thing.

Re: Linksys WRT54G v.5 help

^^ this can nuke a router quickly.. no offence.

you are using the most popular router available.
if it is left at its default settings there is a chance it will 'conflict' with an identical router - with identical out-of-box config.

check your wireless available list.. you may only need to change your channel (default is 6 - change it to 11 or whatever)
