I worked as "the guy in the back" for a small, 5-store electronics chain, and can assure you that the odds of any random US salesperson knowing beans about PAL players is just about nil. They simply don't deal with other TV systems very often. You need to get the information from the web, and really should buy it from the web as well.

Re: ISO cheap dvd player that plays pal

Our boys just received dvd players for christmas, they are cyber home ones. I was jumping for joy when I read on top of the box that they play PAL dvd's. I think the apex ones play PAL also, should run you around $30 or so.

Yep, many Apex players do. Check out this page on videohelp.com . It should help you figure out what you need.

I bought a Phillips 642 at Walmart last week for $70 that plays pal dvds AND can handle just about any video file you throw at it (Divx included).

Sweet...DivX on CDR plays? I've been wanting to grab something like this to replace my very finicky old Sony for quite some time. About 30-40% of the DVDs I put in (a lot of NTSC too for some reason) it just refuses to read or play, despite the fact that they play fine in my PC.

Re: ISO cheap dvd player that plays pal

Best But sells one called the Cyber-Home(they make computer drives as well) player for ~$40 that handles anything you throw at it. +Rs, -Rs, RW, VCD, SVCD, PAL, NTSC. It does it all. And it converts the signal internally for use w/NTSC TVs.

I have also had good luck with APEX.

Basically, the cheaper the player is the MORE compatible it is with multi-formats. The smaller brands can't afford to manufacture a North American, European, and other country version of their DVD players so they just manufacture ONE that does it all.

Reverse-Logic at its best I guess.

If you put on a DVD disc with 4-5 Divx files on it, does it just play them in sequence automatically?

No - if you burn the dvdr or cdr as just a data disc (iso) then you put the disc in the player and a file menu comes up... Then you just scroll through them menu and select what you want to watch or listen to. The Philips is cool b/c you can easily diasble region codes and make it multi region. They also periodically upgrade the firmware which you can download and upgrade yourself. Hoping they'll eventually make the player able to play flac files...imagine that?

After recommending this machine to many I finally bought one for myself. The remote could be better but it plays everything I throw at it.

Re: ISO cheap dvd player that plays pal

I went searching for a DVD player that played DivX files and after comparing that Philips, the RCA DRC240N, and another deck, I went with the RCA. I don't remember why, but it was a good reason, so look into the RCA DRC240N before you buy one.

Same thing with the files. Just put them on the disc and put the disc in and it lists them and you go to whatever you want to play. It's good to shorten the file names. I was going to try putting folders on there and see if it can navigate.

Also, I haven't tried with the exact same file, but it seems to me that DivX files play back smoother on DVDs than on CDs. Don't know if that's by definition that DVD is better for video images or not.
