Unhappy Extremely slow d'load speeds

Im trying to download the dave matthews band 2006-09-15 dvd posted by tbrown4 and it is taking forever. I realize that there are other people downloading this show as well, but I really think I should be getting speeds faster than 1kb/s, according to the info page, there are 9 seeders on this show, and I have gotten shows faster with less seeders. I have the latest version of bitTorrent, and practically a brand new computer. I have played around with the upload and download rates, and still nothing. At this time, it says I have 130 days left. Im not firewalled, and also don't have to go through a router anymore. Could it possibly be that I have to change my ports to something other than what I had them set to when I was port forwarding? Also, could it be the bit torrent client itself? The samething happened while I was downloading the dmb2006-07-01 dvd the other day, but luckily it picked up a surge somewhere and only took about 2 1/2 weeks to finish. My internet conection is 3mb cable, before I had basically the lowest possible cable connection that you could get. If anyone could shed some light on this for me, it would be great.

Thank you

Re: Extremely slow d'load speeds

but to answer yer ?, it could be that yer cable provider is throttling your speeds...try changing the ports you use for bittorrent and see if that helps...it could also be that the 9 seeders are on extremely slow connections, or alot of other torrents, and thats whats slowing it to a crawl...how many torrent do you have running right now? if you have more than a couple running, that could be it as well

Re: Extremely slow d'load speeds

I can see you aren't downloading any other torrents from here, but what about from other places? The seeders on that show are seeding at good rates and all the other leechers on the show are downloading and uploading at good rates. It's only you who are getting such bad speeds. I would check your settings and make sure that is the only show you are downloading (from anywhere) and that you aren't capping your speeds somehow. If you are on a wireless network, I would check to make sure it is secure and you don't have neighbors using it for free.

Re: Extremely slow d'load speeds

This show is the only one that Im downloading (from anywhere). As for a connection, the cable goes into the modem, then the ethernet wire goes into the back of my computer, so no wireless, and no routers. This is weird, before these past couple of days, i didn't have any problem downloading from this site. Hmmm... no clue. I have my max upload rate set to 20kb/s and max d'load rate at 121 mb/s (i was hoping that setting my d'load rate to that would hopefully kind of kick start the file to download), but it hasn't worked yet! My ports as set outside of the 6000 range, due to the fact that when I forwarded my ports before, I chose a port that wouldn't typically be blocked by an isp. So I don't know if I have to reverse all of the changes on my computer that I made when I forwarded my ports, or if that has nothing to do with it at all.

This may be the problem. BitTorrent cares about Bytes not bits. 20 Kb/sec = 2.45 KB/sec which is very, very slow.

Re: Extremely slow d'load speeds

Bell South has been slow for me for the past several days, almost a week. Also, they had a pretty big network outage today (Jan 14) for about 5 hours. Don't know if they are your provider, but that might be part of the problem. Things have picked up a little this afternoon for me at least.

CJ

EDIT: Just read you are on cable, so I guess that Bell South is not your problem... d'oh!

Re: Extremely slow d'load speeds

According to the Bad ISPs Wiki, http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs, charter throttles high volume users. If its not your settings then I would guess this is it. You might want to run a speed test to see if its your whole line or just the torrent packets. Is it only happening during peak hours? Cable lines are shared so they might only throttle you at certain times. If it is just the torrents and not the whole line then there are ways to disguise the packets, although I've never needed to do it so I don't know how well it would work.

Re: Extremely slow d'load speeds

First... how would I go about running a speed test. Then, if it is indeed the fact that they are just throttling my torrent packets, how would I go about diguising them (I guess I'll be a guinea pig for this). Also, Its not a slow connection just during peak hours, its during all hours. So I definately think the fact that charter is throttling me is a step in the right direction.

go to www.dslreports.com, click the Tools link at the top, then Speed Tests, then find one that's got lots of green and (you will have to have java installed for the next step) click Start Test. Make sure you have all internet-accessing problems turned off (like bittorrent clients) during the test.

As far as disguising (known as obfuscation in the bittorrent lingo) use Azureus as your bitorrent client and go to Tools, Options, Transfer (I think - you'll find it in there somewhere) and you can set up encryption on your data You may need to go to Azureus' wiki page (google it) to find out what kind of encryption is necessary for Charter, if it's even necessary.

<a href="http://speedtest.dslreports.com"><img border=0 src="http://www.dslreports.com/im/21889673/17495.png"></a>

According to the test, compared to the average of 645 tests of charter.com * download is 57% worse, upload is 49% worse. So this means, that it is my isp!

Re: Extremely slow d'load speeds

i downloaded Azureus, followed what it said on azureuswiki.com reguarding how to avoid traffic shaping, and now its working (for the time being... hopefully longer). Im getting 61kb/s d'load and 13kb/s u'load. Thanks to everyone, especially slewofboots and explosivo for pointing me in the right direction.

Re: Extremely slow d'load speeds

nice!
Did you find Charter on the Wiki page of ISPs? You may be able to adjust the encryption level to reach even higher speeds by raising (or even lowering the level of encryption) to trick Charter further. What were your speeds (KB/sec) during the speed test. Your reply of 57% better, etc. was completely meaningless, so don't go blaming your isp just yet
