Help need to convert 24 bit to 16 bit recording?

I need an idiots guide to help me convert a 24 bit recording to a 16 bit recording so that i can burn to a cdr.

I am using Audacity 1.2.3 on a G5 mac with OSX 10.4.3.

All help will be gratefully received.

Re: Help need to convert 24 bit to 16 bit recording?

go to file > preferences

select "quality" tab

set it to 44100Hz

set High-quality sample rate converter to High-quality sync interpolation

set High-quality dither to one of the three settings. you'll have to listen to which one sounds the best (you can activate real time dither or just make 3 test mixdowns). You'll hear the difference especially when the audio gets quiet.

hit ok

go to file > export wav

hope this helps

Re: Help need to convert 24 bit to 16 bit recording?

I have some d/l which need this doing to them.
Is it best to make the tracks to one WAV file or can it be done on a track by track basis?
I'm assuming that the tracks will have to be made into one big WAV file or there will be SBEs??
But, it's worth asking in case I'm wrong! (and can save lots of time)

Re: Help need to convert 24 bit to 16 bit recording?

what up symon...i've never downsampled a show thats already tracked out, but i reckon you can do it that way...once you've downsampled, i would just check for SBEs and fix if need be...but i'm assuming everything should be alright.

anyone else, feel free to refute this if i'm wrong tho...

Hey man!
well, it would be quicker and easier if I could do it without having to retrack it.
I shall have to have a little play.
Thanks
