Magic Jack Alternatives

I am planning to disconnect my service with Verizon and plug my telephone into my computer. I haven't yet made the plunge into Magic Jack because I suspect that what I consider buying can be had for free... Help?

Re: Magic Jack Alternatives

there is no free lunch.

magic jack, vonage, skype.. everyone has a connection fee + a per minute fee (or a flat rate).
skype computer to computer is free. but skype to landline/mobile is fee based.

vonage is the easiest transition & you get to keep your home phone #
there are dual landline/wifi phones for skype service
magic jack only works with a dedicated PC

you can also purchase cordless/mobile wifi phones for skype (and get your own skype phone number for landlines to call you) but you still pay connection + per min fees.

if your phone bill for calls is under $50/month, you wouldn't break even (the first year) to change the service and purchase the new equipment..etc..etc.

if you have a $$$.00/month phone bill - then yes its worth it.

You answered my question very well. Thank you.

What about the rumors that Vonage was sinking into their own marketing costs? Is that old news or just a rumor that someone at Verizon started?
