Isolating stem tracks from multi-channel DVD-A and SACD

I have a number of multi-channel discs in my collection, and a DVD/SACD player with multi-channel analogue outs Front L, Rear R, Centre, etc. as Phono/RCA sockets.

I want to get each channel onto my PC and loaded into Audacity, as separate tracks within that app.

I have a standalone Tascam solid-state recorder, so I could make three passes of the disc, to record front, rear and centre, then load them up in three imports to Audacity, and split the stereo tracks, but I would then have to make adjustments to synchronise them as there's no guarantee I would hit record at the same point on each

The only other ways I can see are to get a multi-channel soundcard, with 5.1 inputs, and use Audacity to record in real time from that, or some kind of USB solution, where Audacity would take a feed from input at a USB port.

Suggestions?

Re: Isolating stem tracks from multi-channel DVD-A and SACD

Hi there if I understand your post correctly , you are trying to rip multi channel discs to your pc in the same way as ripping an audio cd ?

your options are to use either

DVD-Audio explorer ( https://www.videohelp.com/software/DVD-Audio-Explorer )

Foobar2000 ( https://www.foobar2000.org/ )

both of these apps can rip the audio to a pc as a wav file.

you could then use Simple Wav Splitter to split the wav file into each stem (L,R,C,LFE,LS,RS) etc

hope this helps , PM me if you more help / clarifications

OK, I've got Foobar, so will give that a go for the DVD-A, but without an SACD-compatible drive, I'm stuck for those using this method...

Next quest may be to look for an SACD-compatible drive for the PC ...

Re: Isolating stem tracks from multi-channel DVD-A and SACD

DVD-A and SACD-R iso-files can be played in Foobar with the appropriate plug-ins. So you don't need a SACD-R drive for your PC (there is no such thing!), but you can burn the iso-files (DVD blank) and play them in drives that accept DVDA/SACD burned this way. Since the SACD-R is ripped with the Playstation, the Playstation can also play back the SACD-R files (probably the cheapest SACD-R device available).

That's great, thanks, but I have the means to play them as is. I have a standalone DVD/SACD player in the HiFi setup. I don't need to play the iso files

As stated in the OP, I'm looking for methods to get the separate channels into Audacity so I can play around with them separately.

Can your player also play self-burned DVDA/SACD?

Sorry, I should expand on this - the standalone player is connected to the HiFi, which is 2-channel Stereo. If I play DVD-A or SACD on that, it's a hi-res 2-channel mix.

The DVD-A and SACD discs also have surround-sound mixes on them, and I want to extract the stem tracks from these as separate tracks in order to play around on Audacity.

I have no self-burned DVD-A or SACD

Re: Isolating stem tracks from multi-channel DVD-A and SACD

I had already understood your configuration and also your original wish.
In my opinion, WaveLab can import DVDA directly, so it should also be possible to extract the individual channels. Actually, Foobar should be able to do that as well.

Re: Isolating stem tracks from multi-channel DVD-A and SACD

I've used foobar to 'open' a DVD-A, and have used the Convert dialog to save one of the surround-sound tracks as a WAV file.

Something seems amiss with the Simple Wav Splitter, though - download .zip file OK, but when I unzip it, all it gives is a directory full of DLLs but no executable program ....

Re: Isolating stem tracks from multi-channel DVD-A and SACD

So Foobar provides a multitrack wavefile? Hmm, it must be editable with WaveLab! I will find out how to do it later.

Re: Isolating stem tracks from multi-channel DVD-A and SACD

Well, it hasn't been established yet whether it's multi- or twin-channel. Will find that out once I decode it...

Re: Isolating stem tracks from multi-channel DVD-A and SACD

I just did a test with Foobar to convert a 5.1 SACD to Wave, it doesn't work, Foobar can't handle it.

have you installed the foobar sacd plugin ( https://sourceforge.net/projects/sacddecoder/ )

that should solve any issues
