Question Opinions on BitSpirit ??

Just started running a few torrents on this. It's got a lot of features, but seems like it's more geared to the Gamerz, MP3'erz etc crowd, rather than music BT's. It's got a more complicated interface than ABC, but I had it up and running in a few minutes.

Advantage is that it seems to have a fairly conservative memory usage, and seems to do everything Azureus does. Allows you to set UL/DL caps for each torrent, and also has individual file download.

I've been having nothing but trouble (lockups) with ABC since I upgraded recently to XP SP2, so I'm looking to make some changes.

Here's a download URL if you're interested:

Re: Opinions on BitSpirit ??

I tried BitSpirit a long time ago. I can't say there was anything particularly wrong with it, but it didn't convert me from Shadow at the time. Only Azureus managed to make a convert out of me.

But have a look at XBT while you are at it. It's fairly bare-bones at the moment but it looks very promising. It's written in C++ and uses it's own engine, i.e. it's not based on BitTornado.

Just curious, but what would make a BT client be more geared for "Gamerz, MP3'erz etc" ?

Built in library broadcast options, chat and other features that aren't commonly used in the audio trading world. The client has features often found in P2P clients.

It does seem to download torrents just fine, and hasn't stalled or locked up yet.

Re: Opinions on BitSpirit ??

Ok, here's a couple of notes. Program is very stable (so far) and has no problem handling many (10) simul torrents. Has the basic features of Azureus, with a slightly cleaner interface. Doesn't use a ton of memory.

Important missing features: No superseed mode, No Share Ratio metering but it does keep track of UL/DL amounts per torrent, but you have to do the math.
Doesn't allow you to stop seeding at a percentage cap, rather requires you to set the number of hours to continue seeding.

I took a quick look at the XBT client. Very bare bones and FUGLY. Seems a bit feature thin. Haven't used it, so can't comment on memory footprint or stability.

Anyone use anything else that they like better ?

Re: Opinions on BitSpirit ??

Azureus really is the best but my machine chokes on that Java.

TorrentStorm is what I'm using now, it's somewhere between Azureus and ABC in complexity. It uses BitTornado/Shadow's engine.

Re: Opinions on BitSpirit ??

Basically knowing nothing about any program besides tornado, how does the individual file download work? You can actually pick one song you want and not have to download the whole show?

yeah, you can view the list of files and set priority. one of the options is "do not download". So you just tell it not to download all of the files except what you want. I had trouble getting this working before, but I did it the other day and it worked great. I enabled pre-allocate space, not sure if this is what made the difference.

I doubt that preallocate space is what caused it to work. I've downloaded single files with Azureus without having to preallocate space.

wazoo, yes the XBT GUI is very bare bones in appearance, but this client actually has more features than you realize once you look inside it. It just doesn't have all the glitter and flash of BitSpirit or Azureus. I've used it and found that for the downloading of audio files such as we get here at TTD it has everything you need except for super-seed mode.

Once super-seed mode gets added, the XBT client will be a force to reckon with. It uses very little memory, btw. I still use Azureus as my main client, but I am keeping a very close eye on XBT because I think it's the only client currently out there that has the potential to give Azureus a run for it's money. I've tried all the major clients at one time or another, TorrentStorm, BitTornado, G3, etc. etc. and the only ones I've left on my computer are BitTornado (v0.3.7), Azureus, and XBT.

Re: Opinions on BitSpirit ??

I am using BitLord and I like it. The main feature I was looking for was for it to run through one port a la azureus so that it would work with my router. Not a hog on memory, written in C++, shows individual (and total) share ratios, everything you could need plus:
Intelligent Connection, Auto Optimization for different connections.
Smart Rate Control, optimize the upload distribution to get the max download rate.
Disk Allocating, no long-time disk allocation, decrease disk fragment to almost zero.
Intelligent Hash Scan, no time-consuming scanning when seeding / resume

Re: Opinions on BitSpirit ??

Giving Torrent Storm a workout today. Seems nice and straightforward. The GUI is a bit weak. Torrent speed is good.

Looks like there are more client side choices than there used to be.

Re: Opinions on BitSpirit ??

Torrent Storm seems to work well, BUT.... I'm not sure that it's reporting my uploads correctly to the EZT tracker. Upload total doesn't seem to be moving.
Not good.... will keep an eye on it today.
