Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

Like has been said many times...I think maybe there should be a share ratio requirement, unless it is a CONFIRMED trader that does B & P. However in regards to this persons share ratio, there is actaully one thing that pissed me off more than the ratio itself, and I am sure there is something Lynne or another moderator could do something about...why the hell is someone allowed to be connected to 76 torrents at one time? At that number, and I don't care what your bandwith is, your upload rate is going to be pathetic. This dude should take "Chachi420"s tag line and hang himself with it...

P.S. And by the time I am done with the two torrents I am downloading, my share ratio will again be above 1.0.

you counted all that shit?

This guy is funny though... maybe he just wanted to see how much he could open at once before his computer crashes... maybe it's dragging so badly now, he can't close any of them.. it's just stuck! what a rube

I wonder if they crashed his computer. He's no longer connected to any torrents: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/member.php?u=41098

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

Tenten2003's on a couple of my torrents and I was wondering how to find a place to name and shame, when I stumbled on this thread. Axe him/her now, if possible...

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

I'm gonna try a new announce script. Someone holler real loud at me if you start getting errors. I have the old one saved, of course, but the only way to test tracker stuff is to go live with it. It adds another mySQL call into the script for people with ratios less than .10. So, we'll try this out for now.

It will limit him to only downloading 10 torrents at a time (it shouldn't affect any torrents only being seeded). I want to try that limit first since it shouldn't affect a whole lot of people.

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

OK, I just kicked the guy off the tracker. So, the next time his torrents try to 'announce' to the tracker, it should only let 10 torrents on and then give him an error for all the others.

Yeah, I started and stopped mine a few times and all is well. However, I notice that tenten2003 hasn't come back on and his torrents should have announced again by now. I'll be watching Technobabble for while to see if anyone posts about having connections issues. (Although all seems fine for a bit over 6000 peers. So, who knows what is up with his.)

It still gives an image to the members that its ok to uberleech but you can only uber 10 if you are .10 or less on the ratio.

Is that really such a good thing i wonder?

I still don't see him on any torrents. But if you saw him on at one point, Lucas, then that is good.

KoolKat, before I actually post anything about only leeching so many torrents per ratio (I can make it different for different low ratios), I want to make sure it works. So, I'm making it real loose right now to test it out (basically, he is my test case ). Unfortunately, I have to test out tracker stuff live to see how the site will handle it.

Thats Kool Lynne,
i did see him as well on 8 after you posted about the new script add on

i just didnt want the good peeps of the site to get a wrong impression
as it sort of undermines them otherwise and would eventually give an i don't care image.
But i have read that you have capable hands so all's good

Thanks for working on this Lynne. Not much really gets under my skin, especially when I get to enjoy the fruits of someone else's labor so much, but this was not even abusing the system...it was more like trying to beat it into submission. Thanks again to all the seeders for puttin up these great shows.

Oh...and jameskg...to answer your question...TWICE

U2Lynne,
I think this Uberleecher has been fixed, but I noticed a couple of others with long torrent lists. It was clearly a case of ignorance, as their response to a message from me that this was not the right way to use the Den, was to politely apologise and cut back the torrent list. If you have a means to track excessive torrent dls, a message explaining the situation might be all that's needed. Of course with the new restrictions in the tracker, this is a problem that will die on it's own accord, so it might not be worth the trouble.

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

Actually, I did a quick database query to list the top users on the site on the most torrents. Most of them were on to upload (the name of the show is in green if they are a seeder, in blue if they are a leecher). But, I think you are right in that is is ignorance that makes them think it's a good thing to leech or seed so many shows at a time. I think I'm going to post a message on the first page about it and see if it changes things.

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

Some of these "uberleechers" must be coming over from the ZOMB site. This seems to be the norm over there.

I thought this was completely insane. I posted in their forums about this practice and met with some opposition. Even the mods over there seem to do this. There explanation was they wanted to keep torrents alive. "Seriously, how long does a torrent need to live?", I asked.

I found myself on a couple torrents that were fairly old with only one seeder. This seeder was seeding 70+ torrents and uploading at .01 - .02 KB/sec.

IMHO, users like this should not be welcome on torrent sites. I commend the mods here in taking care of this problem.

Thank you =)

The discussion on the zomb site was not about someone trying to download 76 shows at once. It was about what some people considered was sharing too many shows at once.

Being an ubersharer is far different than being an uberleecher.

What you are talking about is the opposite of what is being discussed here. You posted at Zomb that you were leeching from somebody who was seeding 70+ shows.
What is being discussed here is people leeching loads of shows.
At Zomb people can only download 4 torrents at a time in user class. This number goes up as the ranks climb. We also enforce a strict ratio system to stop people leeching and not sharing back at least a reasonable amount.

We are also aware that people seeding a lot of shows can reduce the speed on each individual torrent - if there are peers on each torrent. Some users choose to seed lots of shows, to ensure that their upload is maxed out and so that they can share as much as they can. It's frustrating to have only a few torrents open and not be able to max your upload because the leechers have a slower connection, or problems connecting. So some people choose to have a lot of torrents running rather than having to sit and constantly check their client and stop/start torrents as required.

Rather than criticise people who share, try being polite and appreciative of their sharing, without which you may not get the torrent at all.
And rather than getting a dig in at a site where you have downloaded a lot of quality stuff, read the topic and contents of a thread before shooting your keyboard off. This is called "Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread". This is a problem that is taken care of by the staff and the system coding at Zomb as I described above.

Your issue could be taken care of by messaging the seeder, asking if they could help you out and letting them know how fast you are able to download from them. Then they can stop whatever torrents they need to, if they can and want to. Remember these people are sharing, and I do not feel it is a site staff's place to tell them how to utilise their own connection, as long as they are sharing and keeping within the site's requirements.

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

i am always amused by those that do crazy things , to have more than a few torrents going , ( i max at 4 ) i normally keep to two torrents going at a time as my max upload without crashing my isp,s modem is around 250 connections and a 40 to 45kb/s upload speed , i want torrents to download fast and to at least try and keep the torrent speed up ,to have so many going at once is crazy as it means the speed of the torrent slows right down to a pointless level , i am glad the maximum has been dropped down to prevent idiots slowing everything down , it seems the team here are on the ball

so a big thanks to the staff here for keeping a good site good

I think the point is that nobody has the right to dictate how people use their connection. It is fair enough to limit downloads, etc to limit leeching or hit & running. But to tell a user how to upload is just being authoritarian, unless you are paying for their connection.
It is fine to express an opinion and give advice as to what you think is right. But others have their own opinions and they are valid opinions. Personally, I think that torrents do work better if people do not overseed. However, I sometimes leave many running overnight to ensure that my upload speed is maxed out all night. It means some of my torrents may not run at what some consider "decent" speed. But it does mean that I am sharing and that the leecher will complete the show - even if it takes a few days.
Again, if a user PMs me or posts in a Forum about the speed I am sharing, I will try to accommodate them if I am around to stop and start torrents...

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

By hook or by crook, this is my opinion and I'm sticking to it whether it is liked or disliked, agreed or disagreed with, read or unread for that matter.......

Ratio here is dictated by the user themselves.....respectable is 1.00 which shows you are giving at least what you're taking[regardless of bandwidth because that point is mute and a poor argument at that]....so use it respectably.....this site and ALL other torrent sites need leechers but they DON'T need BAD leechers to survive.....they have a core community that cares enough no matter what their situation to seed whatever they download no matter how long it takes them....they do because they care, NOT because they have too. If you don't care, then don't, you can always become a member of Demonoid or a dump site that feels the same way you do......FREEWILL baby, take it or leave it......

Thanks all for letting me rant .......it helped.

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

I'm assume they did. I told them i wanted nothing to do with their site and to delete my account as there was no option to do it myself, I deleted all the torrents I uploaded (as is my right to do so), and I went back and blanked out all my forum posts.

Such a shame as it is a nice looking site, but I just didn't trust much I downloaded there. People changing original archive files and re-distributing them, people seeding 50+ shows at a time who obviously don't have the bandwidth, getting a lot of criticism to my posts when I was only pointing out that some of the practices over there are typically frowned upon in the trading community. Not to mention torrents with commercially released content in them. 99% of what is over there comes from TTD or DaD anyway. To each their own....I don't want any part of it.

My sentiments exactly especially when it comes to people who post there making it appear as if they're the original source of the upload. I started challenging some guy, with the handle of UnkArl, about a particular Tori Amos torrent that came from another tracker. I asked him why he removed original artwork, putting his "courtesy" screenshots, and not giving credit to the original source/uploader. He basically said "it's none of my business and torrents get re-distributed anyway". Well he apparently tried doing the same thing on DaD and the original source busted him.

The staff on Zomb are a bunch of hypocrites too. One of them started asking about why I was uploading from different ips. I guess they saw I was capable of upload speeds as high as 2Mb/s from one ip. I explained that for one of the ips I had T3 access at my school but am discreet about using it. After they got the explanation, they promoted me to high speed uploader (as if that actually means anything). I thought about why they had asked me questions and decided stop uploading there ever since the inquiry. Well a couple of weeks later, after no activity my part at Zomb, I was demoted to my original status. I was right about my suspicions that there might be something fishy with Zomb 'cause of the questions they had posed.

Actually you were promoted from high speed sharer to uploader heymnaooh1...which you still are.

And before anyone tells me my ratio sucks here, I know it.
I'm just living by TTDs rules and there are no ratio requirements.
I'd follow them if there were FYI.

Roshambo was banned for telling one of our staff to f*ck off on the public forum.

We also don't allow commercially released material. If you saw something, why didn't you report it?
We are constantly checking stuff, but can't know and spot everything.

LMAO.

Only and after I had already posted that I wanted my account deleted and your "staff" proceeded to lay into me with a few offensive statements of their own.

You were even online when I msg'd you to delete my account. Why did you not remove my account then??? I can only assume you wanted to make sure that I saw your staff's comments about me and bait me to post my offensive statement. Well done =)

ROFL.....It was like within 30 secs of that post that my account was deleted/banned. Had your finger on the trigger huh.

As far as offending torrents, I tried posting about trading do's and don'ts only to be ridiculed and labeled a whiner. With such an enormous staff to user ratio I would figure that stuff like that would be under control anyway....but maybe your were too busy trying to sort which of your 100+ seeds was not "maximizing" your upload

Anyway.....it's done and over with...go back to whatever it is you do over there...as you will have no problems with me anymore.

Actually, in our FAQ, we do ask that you try to achieve a 1:1 ratio because that is how bittorrent works best (if everyone downloads and then shares the same amount). We just don't ban people for low ratios. We recognize that this site is more than just a bt site. If you look at user's profile, if they have offered b&ps before or started vines here, those are all listed in their profile. This allows people to take an overall look at a user before deciding if they want to open a window for them or trade with them.

I can't emphasize this enough. Being a mod myself, I'll say that we rely a lot on users reporting threads/torrents that have commercially available material in them. Mods don't have the time to go through every single upload to the site and check to see if anything listed is also available commerially. Not every mod is familiar with every artist and every album that that artist has put out. I think everyone has a responsibility to try to help keep our music trackers free of commercial releases (if that is the goal of that tracker). I have a feeling if one of us got shut down, that most likely they would then come after the rest of us and then there would be no more (public) torrent sites.

You know where you can stick that "promotion" and zomb account. I don't give two shits about your "promotion". It's the fucking Internet. The only people who need to start handing out "promotions" over the Internet are those who want to feel important.

Just because there are no ratio requirements that doesn't mean you can go one abusing the system at TTD...that's why you're one of the hypocrites.

Holy shit that's the lamest fucking thing I've ever heard. You need a rule for everything you do in life to decide whether it's right or wrong?

Your wish is my command
You want anything else with that?

Since you all are such a nice bunch of people (especially you roshambo, love ya man ) I'll improve my ratio to 1.0 to show you my appreciation.

just for the record, the zomb staff deleted two reports of officially released material (a primuslive soundboard) by me and then banned me when I posted about it on another forum.

Re: Name & Shame Uberleechers Thread

Wow, sounds like a place I don't need to be apart of........respectable places are much more attractive because the folks who run the joint actually care about the users.....like TTD and DIME. Following the rules/guidelines and following blindly are two very different ideals......I have heard good and bad about ZOMB but when I looked at it there was nothing that I couldn't get either here or at DIME and since these places keep a respectable house, I would decline ANY invite to ZOMB or any other place that would ban a user for speaking freely about his good/ or bad experience on another site............

Deadmarsh, good luck with the ratio thing.....if it takes a thread like this to "kindly" inspire you to raise it to a respectable status maybe a place like Demonoid or Komodo Village would be better suited to your needs, they don't seem to mind hit n run leechers at all.
