Quick questions about lineage

This is from the Tull thread that recently opened, but I guess my question would apply to any lineage.
audience>unknown transfer>reel>DAT>CDR>EAC>Cooledit>flac>you

Where is says "EAC>Cooledit>flac", does that mean that EAC sent the info directly to Cooledit or is it implied that it was first saved as WAV then opened in Cooledit? Also, it's been a while since I've used Cooledit. Does it natively support FLAC or do I need to install the FLAC codec?

One last question, and I suspect it's a matter of personal preference, but what's the prefered program - Cooledit, Sony's Audition, or Audacity? I know Audition used to be Cooledit, but is the older Cooledit prefered to Audition for any other reason besides price (or lack of)? No need to go into lots of detail as to why one is prefered over another. Just a quick, short and sweet answer, if possible, will suffice.

Thanks.

Re: Quick questions about lineage

Audition's owned by Adobe, not Sony. And I'd say it's preferred over both its ancestor and audacity, from a functional point of view.

PS: I have no idea whatsoever wtf CoolEdit could've be used for in the lineage you quoted, except for editing (fades? cuts? eq? whatever?)

Re: Quick questions about lineage

Good eye

EAC>Cooledit>flac implies EAC>WAV>Cooledit>flac since EAC can't interface directly with Cooledit. You also reminded me to pm the seeder to ask if he has any information about the generation of the reel, DAT and/or CDR.

Coolpro/audition can only read FLAC directly with the appropriate filter available here, among other places. the filter goes in the coolpro2/audition main folder with the other .flt files (take it out of the .zip).

.wav editors are mainly a matter of personal preference, as you suspected. Coolpro and audition are almost identical at this time, and have a few advantages over Audacity (such as realtime effects previewing). Audacity also has a few very nice tools that aren't available in coolpro/audition. Some ppl like wavelab, goldwave, cubase et al... mainly the way they work is slightly different, the overall quality of the final product is mainly up to how ppl use them, not so much which program they used.

I knew that . I was thinking of Sound Forge and Sony came out instead of Adobe

I've had CoolEdit, EAC, and Goldwave for the longest time. I'm not very proficient with them, but I never really needed them for anything but the most basic tasks (cut/copy/paste, and minor volume adjustments). I plan installing EAC, Audition, Audacity (for those extra features, "just in case"), and whatever torrent creating program (gotta look that one up). I'd like to be able to help out additionally by doing what Fatoldpig did for the Tull torrent, if need be. I don't have much to share, so any other way I can help, I'd like to try. I've already downloaded (or had) the tools from the FAQ, so it's just a matter of installing and learning them when I get the time (read that as, "I'll be back with more questions ")

Thanks again for the replies. They were most helpful.

Re: Quick questions about lineage

You'll be an expert in a couple months, I'm sure.

EAC is a little tricky, follow the link in my signature. It takes a bit of time to configure the offsets, then you're off and running. For Audacity there's a couple settings that need to be made, set the spectral to display to 22kHz and the bitdepth/sample rate to 16bit/44.1kHz (not default, but it should be!). Then you're ready to rock! Start threads here about this stuff anytime.

Re: Quick questions about lineage

Thanks for the info. I'll make a note of those couple of things and when I get time to install and play with them, I'll be back here, for sure.
