GSpot giving wrong info?

So, I downloaded a DVD over at dime and the info given by the uploader and sort of confirmed by the taper is this,

NTSC 16:9
720x480
29.97fps
vbr 6200 (avg)
Stereo LPCM,
48kHz
1536kbps

but when i put any of the .vob files into GSpot i get this

Video,

Region: NTSC
Bitrate: 9000 kbps avg
Frames: 29.9
Aspect: 4:3

Audio,

AC3 48000Hz 256 kb/s tot , stereo (2/0) CBR

and, when i try to play it in VLC or any other player i have, it definitely plays in 4:3 not 16:9

so, is GSpot giving wrong info or is the original info given in the torrent b.s.?

Re: GSpot giving wrong info?

Original info is bs and/or there was a fuck up during authoring and settings were not changed.

Re: GSpot giving wrong info?

that's what i figured but, the taper is swearing the same dvd that he traded to the uploader plays in 16:9 for him. he didn't comment on the difference in bitrate and audio codec though...

thanks for the answer.

i've been talking with the taper via pm and he says his copy of the dvd that he sent to the uploader plays perfectly fine in 16:9 and that so far i'm the only to report any problems. so, i don't know. check it out, i'd like to see for sure if i'm the only one having problems.

Re: GSpot giving wrong info?

I've downloaded the first 3 VOB files from the torrent.

The VOB files are in 16:9 format, but the issue is that the IFO file (VTS_01_0.IFO) is telling your DVD playing software (VLC, DVD Player) to play them at a 4:3 aspect ratio. You can override this setting by changing the AR to 16:9 in VLC or by forcing your TV to display the video as 16:9.

There is a program called IFOEdit which allows you to edit the IFO/BUP files, so that they play the video in the correct aspect ratio. This will not affect the quality of your video (and no re-encoding is done).

I have done this and uploaded the files here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?53fur4peq13zw

Download them and replace your existing files and you'll find that playback will be as expected.

Re: GSpot giving wrong info?

i had been doing the forced 16:9 already to watch it and i kinda figured that was the problem. but, why is GSpot telling me the individual .vob files are in 4:3?

thanks for the fixed files, at least i wont have to keep forcing it.

The VOB files are anamorphic 16:9. That means the 16:9 video is squashed into a 4:3 frame. When the video is played back the, the video is then stretched out so that it plays correctly on a 16:9 device (the IFO file controls this behaivour). I think you'll find that all DVD VOB files will be flagged as 4:3 as a DVD's resolution is 720x480 (NTSC) or 720 x 576 (PAL).

Sorry, I don't know what that means.

The link I provided has 2 files for download:

VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP

VTS_01_0.BUP is actually a copy of the VTS_01_0.IFO file. Both files should be the same (except for the file name).

A BUP file (Back UP) is a backup of the IFO file on a DVD, which contains the information about the organization of tracks, menus, chapters, subtitles on the disc. BUP files are used in the event that the corresponding IFO file is unreadable, perhaps due to a scratch on the surface of the disc.

no, if it's properly authored as 16:9 it will show up as 16:9 in GSpot.

Ok, fair enough. Hopefully when you replace the IFO and BUP files with mine, GSpot will show the correct aspect ratio.

I can't see how that could occur. There are two files (with different file extensions) available to download. Is your operating system hiding the file extensions? Alternatively if you PM me your email address I can email the files to you instead.

Re: GSpot giving wrong info?

i just tried again and it downloaded properly as .BUP. i tried it multiple times yesterday and it kept downloaing as .IFO, weird.

the menu is still 4:3 but, the video plays in 16:9. it still reads as 4:3 in GSpot though. is there anyway to change the menu? i think it will read as 16:9 then.

Re: GSpot giving wrong info?

I've uploaded updated versions of the VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP files which control the display of the menu. The menu is now stretched to 16:9. Use the previous link I provided to find these files.
