Will ISPs take notice if you download lots?

I've heard that if you download/upload enough your ISP will take notice and look at what you're downloading, possibly punishing you for the content you're downloading.

Is there any truth to this? Not worried, just got myself curious.

Thanks - Kevin

yes. Most seem to receive a notice of over-usage. Ive never received one personally.

as far as content / packet sniffing - most anyone can do this, not just your ISP.

Re: Will ISPs take notice if you download lots?

I've had anywhere between 15 gig to 184 gig in one month up and down with my ISP in the last 7 months with an average of about 100 gigs both ways (had one week with 140 gig split up and down ). Never received a notice and my internet is on pretty damn near 24/7. Download a program called DU meter to track your up and download so you have logs and ammuntion if they do call and bitch about your habits.

Re: Will ISPs take notice if you download lots?

My pal received an email from his ISP (Comcast Cable Internet) which warned him about his piracy of movies. He was foolish enough to forward this to me, and it cited the specific files he was downloading (Charlotte's Web movie...HAHAHA!) via BitTorrent.

They know.

That's why I've started being a bit more vague in the titling of the stuff I torrent. I don't spell out the full name of the band or venue.
