SHN --> WAV --> TY CD-R --> SHN (is that acceptable?)

So is that lineage acceptable within the community (not for seeding), or am I losing too much quality.

Not for seeding? Trading? You probably won't lose any quality, but as long as you don't seed you can pretty much do whatever you like.

(btw, why use SHN the second time?)

why not just backup the original shn files? and I'd make flacs...... if I didn't backup the originals.

Re: SHN --> WAV --> TY CD-R --> SHN (is that acceptable?)

was the "wav > TY cdr" burned as a data disc or as an Audio CD? if its a data disc, then there should be no problem...if as a an Audio CD, then you'll need to note that you re-extracted to wav [using xACT i assume] and then to shn:

SHN --> WAV --> TY CD-R --> xACT --> WAV --> SHN

either way, i'd re-encode to flac instead of shn, but thats just personal preference i guess.

Anything is fine for trading as long as you let the person you are trading with know exactly what they are getting.

And, as said above, if you are going to extract from CD-R to wav, convert them to flac afterwards, not shn. flac files take up less 'space' and the fingerprint is more universal (it will give you the same fingerprints as if you made an shntool md5 of the wavs or aiffs or shns or apes).

check the link explaining secure FLAC conversions in my signature

keep the fingerprints the same as much as possible, that's what matters

Re: SHN --> WAV --> TY CD-R --> SHN (is that acceptable?)

What you really need is the original md5 from the original shn set. Then you can check the new shns against the old md5 set. If they check out then cool, go to flac. But if it's different you should make a note of that in your lineage. There was some debate about this on bt.etree when one of the Phish whole-year projects started.

Also, if you have original wav md5 files those will work too.

It also depends on if this is a new source/transfer or there is a lower generation source available.

Slowly, I am putting together a database of all my data archived shows, and calculating an .st5 for each. Let me know if you'd ever be interested in them (along with other info such as text files, shntool len/info files, and EAC logs when available). Hope to put up a website with all my info sometime in the next year (just need to get around to learning javascript).

Re: SHN --> WAV --> TY CD-R --> SHN (is that acceptable?)

I ask because back in the day i didnt backup the original flacs/shns, i would just covernt to wav and burn. the thing was i was able to get ahold of some real gems, and i want to back them up.

But this def. would not be kosher for seeding right?

Re: SHN --> WAV --> TY CD-R --> SHN (is that acceptable?)

then we can only discuss further if its about a specific show

there will be some resistance from staff here due to the lineage

but we appreciate honesty and will consider if it is really that rare
